Default Hardness of clutch installation in a 97 SH?

Okay, i know the answer is obvious; its going to be a bitch. I hear that honda charges something like 6-7 hours worth of labor.

But theoretically, if i had all the tools required, had a decent amount of technical knowledge, and a helms manual right next to me, could i do this myself? Thanks guys.

If your doing it on a lift it is a lot easier (of course). But either way it is like a 6 hour job so that tells you it is a PITA.

I recently did it on my base model, took a day and a half working on it off and on. Did it almost entirely myself, air tools are almost a must have and it really helps to have a friend assist when it actually comes time to remove/reinstall the tranny itself. Only problem i had was that i broke the boots on the lower ball joints, the tool i had to seperate them did the job but destroyed the boot.

Assuming the SH is more of a PITA than the base model, is there a lot more labor involved in an SH repair? Any time estimates?

I have heard the SH is a bigger bitch than normal, but I'd imagine if you are technically inclined and have the right tools, it shouldn't take more than one full day.

Depends if it has ATTS or not... ATTS is a real pita! 6 hrs for normal 10 hrs w/atts

Yes, the SH has ATTS

Yes, i understand it will be a time *****

However, this will probably be happening over the summer sometime, so weather and time will not be an issue.

Atts is going to inhibit you for a while but if you follow the right steps it will not be any HARDER than any other car, just more time consuming and more steps involved in the process. Preludes in general have always been a bitch for DIY clutches.

Yeah, my mechanic wanted to push my old 86 prelude off a ledge, had to remove the whole front right suspension in order to do the replacement

Anyways, about the comment about having airtools, would a heavy duty breaker bar and some wd40 do the trick? Thanks guys.

i did it on my SH.

comments...

what a bitch.

the ATTS unit is hard as hell to put back on. and no you cant get the tranny off without taking the atts unit off. i tried.

its worth it to do yourself, but it takes a while. the stealership will charge 9 hours of labor for this job. that is by people who do this on a normal basis. it took me three 10 hour days. i was by myself, with a lift and all of the proper tools. 90% of it is a 1 person job. if you dont have multiple jacks (tranny, engine and atts unit) then i would either get them, or take it to a shop.

yes it was worth it, but damn was it a bitch.

Damnit, just as i was begining to feel confident that i would be able to do this at home, you had to post this depressing and hopeless post lol

So, just to clarify, did you have the helms with you every step of the way, proper tools? What, exactly, made it a 30 hour ordeal? Everyone else seems to agree that 9-10 hours is the average time.

yes i had a helm manual.

9-10 hours in average if everything goes as planned. you dont have to leave to get parts, and you know what you are doing.

i had never done a clutch before so i took my time.

Nice to see you again shakes.

As far as I know the main problems people have with the clutch install are the right tools and trying to snake the tranny out the bottom of the car. Some people even take out the whole lower cross-member. It's all a matter of what your willing to tackle, me personally, I really don't have the adequate tools to do something like an SH clutch install. I can do all the brake work and minor motor work you want, but the tranny's require a TON of patience, and tons of special wrenches and sockets that are made to go in at angles and such. Before you attempt it yourself see if you have a good access to a lot of different tools and maybe a lift. A lift and some jacks would cut your work down by a 1/3rd as opposed to jacking up the front of the car in your garage. Just my $0.02.
