Tranny went out, please help.
I already searched on this, and nothing much came up that helped me. With that being said...
The other night I was taking my girlfriend out to dinner and I started hearing thoise sireny noise (no other way to describe it) I thought it may be a belt, or something and that I'd take a look at in the morning. Morning rolls around my girlfriend wants me to come over to her house so we can goto the mall. I start driving my car, after about 2 minutes it starts shifting werid (I have a 1994 EJ1 AT) it would usually shift at like 30-35mph, but this time it didn't I got it up to like 4500 on my tach (would normall shift at like 2800 or so) and it shifted but then it would do it again. I finally make it to my girlfriends house and the car wasn't responding to the pedal at all, the engine would rev and what not, but it would not move.
I turned it off, turned it back on, and it started driving again. I made it to her house, I checked the tranny fluid, and there was fluid in there. Then, I decided I needed to get it back to my house, my car didn't even make it a mile before totally stopped responding to the pedal. When I was crossing this street, I got the car up to like 5000 on the tach and it BARELY got across the road.
Is my tranny totally shot? Is it just a part of it? What was that sireny noise? How much would it cost to get fixed? Thanks.

stock tranny?
when did you have your clutch replaced?
It wont respond to any gear?
If its not your daily driver, then take off the tranny and open it. Its good learning experience. If it is your daily driver, good luck. Used single cam trannys are cheap.

If you didn't take the time to read my post, and it looks like you didn't. I have an AUTOMATIC transmission. Last time I checked, my car didn't have a clutch. It is my daily driver, and my work schedule right now doesn't really give me any freetime to screw around with my car.
And if my tranny is out, I was planning on doing a tranny swap to accomodate my b16a to come, is there anyone in the 98208 area that has done this before and could help me with it?

could be seals, sensors, loads of stuff. i would take it to a reputable place, they can help you out more than most of us here. i don't really understand autos that great, especially repairs.
i do know that the only two autos i have had give me problems had bad sensors, but they didn't catastrophically fail like yours seemed too.

I didn't have time to do any CELs, I had to get my car home on a flatbed, when my house was seriously like 30 seconds away. I spent the majority of the day trying to get a flatbed. I got some cool pictures though, I'll post them up later.

Yeah, it's already at a shop in my area. My stepdad had his tranny replaced there for his older Chrysler Mini-Van (lol, I know) and they cost him like 2000... He said, it would come to like 1500 for me or so, but that seems like it's way over priced. Am I wrong? Or is that a typical price?

Heh, I have no idea. This guy at my work said it could be my torque converter, I'm sorry for the noobish question, but does my car have a torque converter? Could that be the problem?
yea you have a torque converter. It is in the bell housing between the transmission internals and the engine. I would guess that it probably isn't the torque converter. Imagine the torque converter as a clutch pack that most likely will not go bad on a stock car.
check the cels before you spend all that money, it could be a sensor.

It's already the shop, wouldn't the be able to tell that it wasn;t the tranny if it was just a sensor?

the sensor would tell the tranny to work like ****. and they could replace the whole trans when they may only need to replace a sensor. Just run in the car with a paper clip and check the cels, it ain't hard. I bet they won't do it at that trans shop.
I know what you mean, the shop is a town over, and I really don't have anyway to get there. Oh, and about me checking CELs in the past, whenever I would do it, the SRS light would just flash, was I doing something wrong?
OMG!!!! My girl just had the same EXACT problem you just mentioned with her car (98 civic auto ex). Same whine, same no pedal response and just revs up, same inadvertant running and then no go problems. This doesn't sound like a limp-home-mode type problem at all, but maybe like they said, torque converter since the only other thing that comes remotly close is bad clutch which these cars don't have one.
Good luck man!! I hope you find out what's wrong because I definitly need to know too!!

do whatever you can to check your cels before you go getting a new transmission, you could be out of winshield washer fluid and if you bring it to a transmission shop guess what they are going to sell you
get a used auto tranny. oput it in yourself. And save alot of money. Thats what i did on My girls car, like 2-3 years ago. tranny 300 with a warrenty. 250 installed by my boy.(who has his own shop.) took like a couple of hours.

Sounds like torque converter to me, in which case the transmission needs to be replaced. Dseries trannies are CHEAP
Good luck

i agree
i agree
Only problem is... I would have no idea where to start with removing/installing a new transmission, I'm very car illiterate. Let me put it this way, I messed up when installing a header, yeah I know... lol.
I haven't gotton a price from the shop, but according to my stepdad, it's probably gonna be about 1500. Anyways, like I said, if anyone is the 98208 area and could help me out, I would REALLY appreciate it, because I really don't have that kind of money.

first off what is 98208
second off DO NOT PAY 1500 for a used dseries tranny. The tranny can be had from a junkyard for 200-300 and labor to install a tranny is 200-300. 1500 should buy you 3 dseries trannys, installed, or one brand new tranny installed at the dealership (im serious, call them)

like everyone else said. i would say it is the torque converter. just buy a new tranny. like sohcvtec1995 said. we bought my tranny for 100 bux. yea its a MT but im sure you can find a cheap tranny.
Honestly, what I'm considering as of right now...
I'm considering swapping trannies, I was going to do it eventually, why not right now? The reason I was going to swap trannies is because I was going to swap motors, so what I'm thinking of doing right now is:
Buying a b16a from hmo.com that comes with the tranny, ecu, linkage, mounts, clutch, flywheel, wouldn't all I need from there is the pedal assembly and shifter itself and misc. nuts/bolts?

Can't you just replace the torque converter itself??

I just got word from the shop, the tranny is toast, and the torque converter may be salvagable. And it would probably be like 2k to get fixed with a AT from there. Is my idea of buying a new motor logical, and tranny swapping it? I mean, is that a logical idea?

What did they say was wrong with the tranny?? You gonna get a B16 and a manual tranny?? 2K for a tranny is kinda high, even with labor. Trannys are about 200- 300 used and labor is a few hours. I wouldn't pay 2k at all if I were you. Shop around and find a better shop.
