In Tv (Shutter-speed priority AE) mode you select the shutter speed (from 1/2000 to 15 seconds) and the camera automatically selects the proper aperture value. Faster shutter speeds will "freeze" fast-moving subjects, slower speeds will let you pan with a fast-moving object and blur the background, or hold the camera steady and give moving objects that "motion blur" look.
In Av (Aperture priority AE) mode you select the aperture value (from F2.8 to F8.0) and the camera will automatically select the proper shutter speed. Selecting the aperture allows you to control depth of field (focus range), smaller numbers yield less depth of field, larger numbers yield more.

Nice camera.
I went from the A60 to the A70, then A75, then A85, now... S1 IS.
Try to keep the film speed as low as possible. ( I use ISO50, when plausible )
That will reduce the noise that is such a problem with these Canon camera's.
Good luck with that one, it's a very nice & versatile camera.

This is a review for the A95, but it's almost identical.

Nice choice on the camera. Here's my advice: Keep it in your pocket at all times. Keep it with you in the car. Take it to the movies. Keep it on the edge of the couch when you and your gf are making out. Sleep with it. Take as many pictures as you can, experimenting in every mode. You'll be a pro in no time.

because you have it on a faster shutter speed...the longer the exposure the lighter the picture will be, if you want to use that shutter speed, you need to up your ISO and the picture will be lighter, or you have to make your shutter speed slower like a 1/4 of a sec, but you have to be warry about camera shake.
so you know the higher the iso, the more noise it will have, you will have a lot more fun and be able to take better pics after a camera course...
