Found this vid of the much talked about on this forum Ariel Atom. Pretty neat vid, but I can't understand why this guy hates motorcycles so much. This is the second vid in which I have seen him talkin trash about bikes. He obviously has never been a rider. Plus, he is pairing a CBR600rr which is a good bike, but no where as quick as the new 1K bikes.

That's one of my favorite cars right now, but at >$20,000BP, or >$40,000 I think I'll make my own.

 

For 40K, at least I could use an Elise as a daily driver besides it being the weekend track car.

That car would destroy an elise. There not even in the same class. The Atom is street legal though.

 

Not in the same class, correct, but the Elise would still be loads of fun. My comment was based from a "money is a factor" perspective.

I've only watched a few of these "reviews", but in each one their timed lap isn't a clean one. I don't know if this is part of their testing methodology, but it seems flawed.

Fifth Gear did a comparision between the Atom and the Elise and the Elsie won. I don't think it was against the 300hp snailed C5 though.

yea, it was against the radical.. it barely won on lap time alone.. Downforce Radical VS base Atom, no wonder the radical won..

The funny thing is that Arial says "the Atom was developed in the wind tunnel." Huh? Maybe they rolled it in there and fired up the fan just to say they did it. Can't see that it would be very aero in shape, or have any downforce at all. One big advantage is the low frontal area.

For me, and for $50K, there are other solutions. OTOH if I had the money just laying around, I'd order one in a second...

They pop up used every once and a while used, but the price in the US is still floating around 50K for the higher spec ones. I definitely will have one in the next few years if I can't find a nice Sportech.

You should be abable to get a middle of the road one for ~25-30K soon.

Clarkson has ridden bikes - in addition to hosting Top Gear, he's done a few other shows and specials about basically anything that goes fast. For Clarkson, his criticism of motorcycles was light. He makes a living talking trash about... everything. It's why Top Gear can be so entertaining, even with Tiff gone (all the driving talent is on rival 5th Gear now).

Now, all Ariel needs to do is offer their cars in knocked-down form so that they can be legally sold in the US as kit cars. Hey, it works for Caterham, Ultima and Noble...

Is it street legal in the US? I thought you had to have a windshield in the US to be legal.

Windshields are an optional part

 

yah, windshields are like a technicality thingy. you can have a little plastic visor and call it a windsheild.

i know of two Atom's in socal and at least one will be registered "very soon now (tm)".

i saw this vid today...but i thought the stig died in a car crash? was it just rumors or is this an old vid?

anyways i was surprised the enzo beat it....it's like a really fast gocart

what they do during testing is let the stig take it out for a number of laps..and they just take the best one...i know he spun out with several cars like the carrera and stuff
