why would you go w/ a B18 vs. a H22? or vise-versa? what do you get from these motors that the other does not? im going to build up a 92-95 HB and im just doing some research. i kinda did a search but did not find what i was looking for. thanks.

If your going to compare prices, then it should be H22 vs JDM Type R. Thats how much it would come out to.

Now compare those motors and you get why.

 

A C5 swap itself costs alot of money, putting it in does not.
Vise-Versa.
An H22 swap itself is relatively-cheap, putting it in is the expensive part (due to mounts etc.).
So it is really up to you my friend. If I had the funds..... I'd do both.

what are you wanting to do to this engine. Is this going to be a NA or boost? either way there both good engines just comes down to want you want to do with it. that my .02

 

i want to build a track car, HPDE events and just track time, prolly not going to race scca or honda challange. it will be NA....

as one who put an h22a into a civic (coup), i'll tell you what i know. h22's are the cheapest of honda motors that i can see. that being said, one drawback is that it may cost as much to put it in as it did to get h22. i broke mine and it is now being rebuilt, but consider this: with only i/h/e/tb/c.g., i did 184 whp and 156 lb torque at the wheels. no internal mods. i have stock jdm h22 ecu with vafc-II. mounts will be expensive ($600) or so. but once you get in in (if you go h22) i don't think you will be dissapointed! keep in mind that this setup won't corner very well. i hope i don't offend the b series crowd, but it is hard to deny the sheer brute power of the h22! Either way you go, you will love it and it will bone out. Good Luck!

im not sure of this... but ive heard that h22 heads crack easily under pressure... but there are ways of preventing this... but we're talkin bout extra money not needing to be spent

The main problem on boosted h22's are the ringlands. Some have done high bost some have not, but a comfortable boost level is 7-8psi on stock h22's. I have not heard of any h22 heads cracking under pressure.

For you people talking about how the h22 does not handle well or that it wieghs too much, all I have to say is... drive one. I barely noticed any handling change when going from my d15 to an h22a.

The only downside to an h22 is traction. I can't even think to floor it in the turns, but that will change when I install a Quaife. The extra torque definitely owns b18's.

One last thing, it cost me 2900 dollars, including the swap to put in my h22a, and this was with the purchase of my clutch, fuel pump, fpr, guage, etc.

I have no handling problems with my CRX. I just want to break something whever i hear people make this claim..

i'd also like to add that H22A motors are not "weak" like some might lead you to beleive. when you boost them - yes, you have to be more carefull because the pistons are designed for FRM cylinder walls - just like the S2000 (F20C motor). But they are just as reliable as any other Honda engine with your basic bolt ons and weekends at the track. Honda did not put a crappy engine in the Preludes.

the H22A has great power STOCK. 13's are easy and you dont need a tranny that buzz's like a bee on the freeway to accomplish it.

 

you are absolutely right! i wish i could take back the foul handling part. now that i have good tires and some good strut bars, my coup handles quite well! plus i found out h22 is only 4o lbs more than b16
