It is essentially the same thing, just Toyotas version of I-VTEC. Honda knows how to gear and tune thier VTEC motors better than Toyota does with thier VVTL-I motors. For example, Honda motors stay in V-TEC when you shift, Toyota VVTL-I falls out of LIFT on every shift. VVTL-I has very limited aftermarket support, and what is available is expensive. Whereas the I-VTEC market is growing very quickley and there is already more out for the I-VTEC than the VVTL-I motors. Both are reliable, but the best potentail will always be the honda version.

yea those GTS's suck. I was next to one on the freeway and it tried to take off on me. I just downshifted to 3 and was gone. I don't even have that many performance mods.

GTS is gay. Can't see **** out of them and yes, they are slow. Doesn't have the rev happy engines that Honda engines are known for.

Wow, so many celica haters here....

My brother happens to have an 02 celica gts and he never falls out of lift, the only time you are at risk to fall out of lift is 1st to 2nd, and it only falls off lift if you can't shift fast enough.... It isn't that bad at all. Handling is probably better than a dc5-s stock for stock stops faster etc. I think the only advantage the dc5 has is the horsepower but the low curb weight of the gts makes up for that, and the vvtl-i couldn't be anymore rev-happy than a honda. Stop assuming.

Driven a GTS, Type-S, and all the B-series motors, the GTS didn't have the kick or the feel. I might be a little biased, but that is how I feel. I firmly believe you can't see **** out of them though.

The GTS falls out of lift only if you don't know how to drive. They're also a lot lighter than the DC5 and can out accelerate, brake and handle.

Their big problem is that they're more expensive than the DC5 and Toyota doesn't deal like Acura does. They also don't have the same aftermarket support.

vvtl-i is possibly even a little more advanced than i-vtec. vvtl-i equipped motors have variable lift on intake & exhaust like the k20a2, but it also has variable timing on intake AND exhaust - i-vtec only has variable intake timing.

How much of an advantage it really translates into is up in the air. It increases tuning complexity, not to mention there are no standalone ecus for it that i'm aware of, maybe the aem ems, or a motec system could run it.

The biggest advantage of the i-vtec is aftermarket support. we're currently raping the gt-s platform in terms of that. the dc-5/ep3 has only been out since 2002, and we've already got WAY more aftermarket even though the gt-s had a 3 year head start.

the gearing on the celica gt-s is wider than that of the rsx type-s. i think that would explain the reason for the "falling" out feeling. the theory behind toyota's vvtl-i setup is similar to our vtec but toyota has simplified it somewhat by cutting down on the number of lobes and rocker arms per valve pair. still a great engineered motor but just hasn't got as much love popularly as our hondas.

dont forget about what year gts you are talking about. in 2001 or 2002 they changed the ecu and lowered the rev limit which made you fall out of lift. which made them about .5 seconds slower in the quarter.
also FYI - my good friend works for DA sports which makes a turbo kit for the celica GT, which makes about 240 hp on 8psi on a small Borg-Warner turbo, on piggyback ecu that consistently nets high 12's on a stock 5speed GT
