SMAW welding rod sizes

Default SMAW welding rod sizes

What size/type of rod would you guys recommend for welding 3/16" thickness angle iron together?

Most common for hobby usage is a 6014 or 7014. I prefer a 6010 or 7018, but they cost a little more. I like 1/8" for the 6010 and 3/32" for the 7018.

i got some 3/32" for the 7018.

with 3/32, try 115 to start. that depends what position you're welding though.

i like 1/8 6011... especially when the metal is rusty/dirty


i also like 1/8 7018's because thier ease, but its a pita over head caus they allways stick....


but for what your doing id go with 3/32's 7018s like advised

The 6010 will burn very similar to the 6011. If you can weld with one, you can weld with the other. As for the 7018's....if you have trouble with them sticking, turn up the heat a bit

Also, keeping the rods warm will help them start up. Sometimes, I will hold the end of the rod to the ground, then hold the electrode holder to the other end of it for a couple seconds to preheat it....then strike it and go. You gotta be careful though...they heat up really fast doing this.
