There is a local guy selling an 87 yamaha FZR600, my buddy (Odiedog) recently got one too and for like $500 upgraded all the body panels etc to make it look just like a 00+ R6. Here's a copy/paste of the local guys FS thread:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by "Local guy with bike" »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">22K, very fast & light 600 with a lower seat height so it's nice for
us not-so-tall people. Has the dual round headlights and I put in a
blue-pearlized bulb in the right headlight like the ol' racebikes 8)
The front lower fairing is off-streetfighter style.
2nd gear is special, is comes out of 2nd when gunned so it needs some TLC
Bike is met blue and pearl white. w/ red stripe and black wheels & front fender.
My picture sucks, but you can see the type of bike on Bikepics.com
$1,300.00 OBO or trade for something like a 1997 Honda CR125 dirtbike
or something like a 1992 Honda Civic.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Was thinking I'd offer him $1,000 cash or my turbo kit for it. How serious is the problem of it popping out of 2nd gear?

The 2nd gear thing is fairly common in Yamahas. My buddy has the same problem with his '01 R6 and he says it's really starting to get annoying. It'll pop out and then pop back in when he gets on the throttle.

it can be pretty serious when your mid corner.

Sounds like it's a shock issue. Give the connection a serious jolt and it comes apart... you shouldn't be doing that mid corner. Which means it would stay together just fine during a linear roll on.
Thoughts?

Never happened to me in 3k miles of riding. Must be a n00b thing
I think they are great learner bikes/twisty bikes.

i like mine and it's gonna look bad ***. Stock, it doesn't look that bad, is pretty fast, and a good learner bike.
Throw on some newer YZF600 and R6 body pieces and it'll look like a brand new bike ... throw in a 97 YZF600 engine in it ... and it'll look AND perform like a new bike.

If the transmission is hosed (and that one is), don't bother unless you have a source for a replacement. Used they are hard to find and you could buy 3 more bikes for what it would cost to rebuild it.
If the bulb in the front is of a higher wattage than stock (40?), that's bad too. The electrical systems on the FZR are not very tolerant of those.
$1300? A bit high for an 87 despite all the flashy stuff. All that and he didn't upgrade the most important parts like the front springs and the rear shock. Hmmmm, I don't know about that, it sounds like the reasoning of an idiot. Considering he hosed the transmission in 22k miles, I doubt the bike was well maintained or responsibly ridden.
I like the FZR's but this one is to be avoided. Buy a stock 93-95 for the same money and upgrade the suspension and sprockets, and forget about the motor. Keep it for 2 years and buy another one and keep that one for track day duty, they make excellent low cost track bikes.

Where can I find deals like that at? I was really interested in a mid-early 90s Ninja.

You gotta shop around. Watch http://www.craigslist.com in the Seattle area and something will pop up. Check local papers etc.

not really. i see 90-95ish FZR's in good condition going for $2000+ on eBay. Most early 90's bikes in general go for around $1000-1300 anyways. You got your 97 for a decent price .. and i got mine for extremely cheap ($100) .. there are always exceptions.

i can get the front end up off the ground a few feet .. but my chain is loose and it slips over the sprocket and ate some of the teeth off ... but i was talking to my friend and i said a wheelie couldn't be done on my bike, so he takes off and sure enough he flies past me doin a 1st gear wheelie.
