buying tranny.. Need advice.
i found someone local selling a jdm y1 lsd trans. The price is fair.
He says its great shape, only used for 1yr before he went with hydro setup. No grinds really smooth etc...
Now How to tell if it really has LSD or if LSD is still good?
I searched and found if theres no bar going though where the axles slide in that its lsd.. If you can see right though.. Also that if you spin one axle the other one goes in the same direction.. that means LSD.. Right???
Okay not to test the tranny itself.
I was thinking of poping an axle in, and spinning the tranny though all the gears, and seeing how smooth it feels. I know this is no indication to the syncros.. But hes local and im doing a pickup at his residence so i could always go back if its junk. But to do a quick test first.
Now he says it comes with axles and intermediate shaft. I will have to pop these out to do a visual on the LSD, best way is just a small crowbar right?
Thanks.. hopefully in a few days i can say goodbye to peg-leg.

alright cool. where to look on the tranny? Im assuming its like a engraved style LSD stamp right in... Is it 'LSD' or something else??
Details, details..
Details, details..
The stamp is the quick easy unreliable way to ID a LSD tranny. Too bad it comes off with age, gets hidden by dirt/oil/grease and can be replicated ridiculously easily.
And while I've seen the stamp on later hydraulic trannys, I'm not 100% sure it was the on cable models.
Pop off the axle, it's the best way.

Yup, look through the differential, where the axles go in. If there's no obstruction and you can see all the way through the hole, it's an LSD. If there's a bar running across the hole about midway down, no LSD.

LSD
Most y1's have the LSD stamped on top of the tranny like your engine is stamped. Some are ink stamped and ink fades after time.
