Default coilover install

My friend just got a set of arospeed coilovers. I have a couple questions about the install process. The rubber bushing that fits in the top of the spring, does it have to be used. We tried to use it and then you could not get the threaded rod back thru to put the nut on the rod. Secondly when we tried to put one on, (with out the red piece) First the coil over was just sort of setting loosely, then you got almost no adjustment either way and the suspension was beyond rough it was like you had a steel tube there instead of a shock. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

the bump stop is a lil rubber piece that is there so when u bottom out your strut u dont damage it u hit the stop and its about 2.5 inches tall so u cut it down because ur lowering the ride hight so u gain about an inch of travel on your strut so u have a beter ride
