Default What advice would you give a first time welder along with what welder to get.

I have always wanted to learn how to weld. I was researching a little bit and I like the Hobart 125. But what is the difference between a flux core and a mig. Was thinking about going to harbour freight tomorrow and purchasing a welder. Any advice on what I should get to start out and begin learning how to weld. Thanks a lot

firstly rule 1 is nothing quality comes from Harbor freight..

Even if the products from someone else.

Mig- uses a gas to sheild the weld.. Much cleaner! Requires external bottle of gas.
Flux Core- Uses an internal core of flux to sheild the weld. Not as clean as mig.

Check out weldingdepot.com

I got a great deal on a mig from them and its quite kick ***!

well, i went to harbor freight today. all i can say is, that store is a **** hole. I left, and went home and looked around on the net. I found a welder that is flux core and gas ready, it is a lincoln. I think for my first welder, it will work fine for me. http://www.mylincolnelectric.c...=7114

if you are gonna go lincoln and have some extra cash i'd say go with the 135plus like i said before. the voltage control is a fully adjustable, not 4 presets like there others, and its more powerful for other jobs. Just my $.02, but get what ever you think you will be happy with

ive got the lincoln 135 pro-mig...its great. It come with the gas solenoid and everything set up to mig weld. it also is very easily converted to innersheld flux, by swaping the feed wheel, tip, nozzle, and swapping the polarity.

like stated before...mig=metal inert gas...meaning via a gas nozzle a mixture of argon and co2 create a barrier (shield) around the weld area to prevent contamination of the molten metal before it has solidified.

inner sheild uses a reverse polarity and dose pretty much the same thing except the flux is melted with the metal and coates the top layer to prevent contamination...creating the slag that will be cleaned off the weld.

correct me if Im wrong but thats it in a nutshell....and tig Is tungstan inert gas. a completely different process.

Is $578 shipped a good deal for the Lincoln SP-135 Plus including gas regulators and cart?

Thanks!

I don't think it's a great deal. I think it's silly to buy a cart when you're buying a welder and can make a cart yourself easily.

You can get a regular Lincoln 135 at Lowes for about $430.

Bust my ***** if you must, but Tractor Supply Co. MAY still have the Farmhand 115 package made by Campbell Hausfeld. I picked one up this week for $260 with a cart and everything else you need to make sparks. I know it may not be the best quality, but when a package costs $4 less than the welder itself you almost have to get it. Oh yeah...it's a flux core/mig.
