Need advice on rust...was told a cut and weld is the only way
Ive been going to one body shop for the past two years now but they pissed me off due to taking short cuts with my paint job and such.
I have rust under that long plastic piece that runs along the bottom of the door jam. I took it to a new body shop for an estimate. He said the only thing he would recommend doing is cutting the whole lenght of the medal under the plastic and welding on new metal. He said a sanding wouldnt stop it in that location and that welding is best option ( but alot more costly of course) There really isnt that much rust....do u think that is over kill????????? is there no other way? rust is really starting to stress me out and i dont have alot of money
sounds like what he wants to do would cost a fortune

Ok...i got the pics up..the only thing you need to lock at is where i have black lines. that is where the rust is. The brown stuff is Rustoleum Primer and sux because its the color of rust. any ways the rust i mainly occuring where the plastics ends and is rubbing against the metal.
restored interior (except carpet) and good paint, i just cant beat the rust

another spot of rust

what do you think of my car and its new Projectors?

It dosent look like the rust is completely though. Heres what you do if it isnt completely though.
Pick at the rust with a screwdriver to get all the scale rust off, sand it REALLY well with 80 grit. If you make a few holes dont worry.
Get a por-15 starter kit, follow the instructions, por-15 anywhere you sanded and if you did make any holes, do a few extra thick coats around the holes to try to fill them in (if there very small holes) If there larger holes, pick up some short hair fiberglass filler, look on the can first.. It should say. 'waterproof, and rustproof' fill the small holes and sand smooth.. Next por-15 over the filler and your done.
Id advise you pick up a can of cheapie primer and give the tacky por-15 a dust coat of primer that way it will take primer and topcoat later.
On your door do the same thing if it isnt right though.
This will cost you around $50 and you can DIY it. The por-15 is a very strong rust preventative, they guarentee that if you put it right over rust it will stop it from spreading.. Its good stuff IMO.
Hows the bottom edge of your door? Any rust there? I know mine started there and my rocker was still perfectly fine.
Your car seems to be in excellent shape. Mine was much much worse. Remember you have rubber plugs around your car, theres some in the doorjams, some in the rear wheel wells, some at the front of the rocker pannels. Be sure to have all these cavities 'oiled' it stops rust from comming from the inside out which is what it tends to do on our crx's.
