how do you crank the motor when it's out of the car?
What do you wana do exactly, and we talking cranking it up, or turning the engine over ? if you want to actually move the crank just put a wrench on the crank pully and turn to your hearts content. if you pull the sparkplugs it will become a lot easier as you will no longer have to fight the engines compression.
Turn the Crank by the bolt, depending on the motor there will be a 17mm or 19mm bolt holding the crank pulley on. Get a socket on that bolt and crank away. Make sure you go counter clockwise (loosen) if the bolt is on there correctly it will not come loose while you are turning. Also if the head is attached to the block, make sure that you do not move the crank or cam out of sync, if you do this this is a possibility you can mess up your valves. If you are doing a timing belt it is a good idea to leave the spark plugs in, it will make it harder to turn the motor but will make it hold its position better, if not, then by taking the spark plugs out you will turn the motor over much easier due to loss of compression just FYI.

my distributor cap is broken and i want to replace that along with the rotor. the rotor screw is not where it should be. that's why i want to turn it over.

If your timing belt is intact and properly timed, you won't damage anything. Pull the plugs if you want (to eliminate compression), but it isn't necessary to do so.

yeah, my timing belt is intact and properly timed. so basically just pull out spark plugs and turn the crank bolt? that easy?

haha no way. you're in for a hell of a surprise when you try to get that bolt off at some point later on.

You can still rotate the rotor without having to manually crank the engine. With your key in the ignition just partially turn the motor over. Do not!! I repeat do not crank the motor all the way. Each time you turn it, the rotor will be in a different location. Good luck.

or you could just take of the distributor... and time it later on, which is a wise idea if you are putting the motor into a car anyways.
