Synthetic Oil for EP3
anybody here running synthetic oil on their EP3? I don't know too much about it, but I hear you don't have to change your oil as often, so that might be a plus. Let me know if you guys recommend any brand for EP.
NIce!! I gotta jump on that...
I am also using Mobil 1 0W20 I was usign Castrol Syntec before, and just decide to switch over for unknow reason. Suposebly Mobil 1 claim taht when usign syntectic oil, you follow what in ur car manual and run it to that limit or else you just wated the full performace of the oil, which is 5k miles.

I am also using Mobil 1 0W-20. It seemed to make the car slightly louder under the hood (possibly because it's thinner than stock?) when I first put it in. I don't know about the whole 5000 miles thing, I still change at 3000 miles anyways.

It's my understanding that some of the cars that regularly run synthetic oil have better filtration systems, like a BMW. I dont know if that is actually true, but I do know BMW's acutually take into account RPM's, throttle position, amount of time at different throttle positions and all kinds of engine management info to tell the driver when to change the oil. I think most 3 series dont tell their drivers to change the oil until 12-15,000 miles.
I have been running Mobil in my VW because it is turbo charged and even a factory turbo turns high RPM's. In my EP3 I will also run Mobil because I am planning on keeping the car for years and I enjoy a high revving spirited drive as much as the next guy. I dont know if the Mobil is worth the extra money right now, come ask me in 6-8 years when I can finally afford the Bimmer and I sell my EP3 with lots of miles on it and its (hopefully) still humming along.

Exactly. That's been my argument for years.
The nail on the synth oil coffin (for me) was when Ichishima himself said he felt it was a waste of time, in the same paragraph he was recommending baffled oil pans for track drivers.

engine longevity is not a result of synthetic or regular, but frequency. Kind of like my fish tank, my fish don't care whether I fill the aquarium with evian or tap water as long as it gets changed every 2 weeks...there's my .04 cents
synthetic has different properties than organic. when the car is cold at startup, or starts to run a little thin, from extended high-g cornering, etc, it's enough to prevent scoring. i have seen the results of a motor running almost 200k miles on it. minimal wear, minimal varnishing. i can afford it, so i do it.
synthetic is the best oil out there. especialy!! the mobil 1. i use it on my dc5. plus i get it for free.
you can find a box for about. 23 bucks.oh and if you can, use the mobil 1 oil filter too.

Use synthetic oil. Period. Any major-brand full synthetic will do. You don't need to change it every 3000 miles. I change mine about every 10000. You can go to 15000 if you want. Theoretically, if you had a filtration system good enough and you replenished the additives every so often you could run it indefinately. Synthetics don't break down as readily as mineral oil (regular oil). The additives in the oil do wear out, though, but in that 10000 miles you probably have added a quart or so which is more than enough to replenish them. You should be worried about changing your filter more than changing your oil. If you're paranoid, change your filter every 3000, top off the lost oil with more synthetic and you're good to go.
I have heard Roy Howell, the chief chemical engineer for Red Line Oil (and last time I talked to him I believe he was holding a majority of the company stock), say on more than one occasion, and this is nearly word-for-word:
"I don't care what brand of synthetic you use, just use synthetic. Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil 1, or Red Line - it doesn't matter in your street car they are all good. I recommend Mobil One, it seems to be on sale the most often."
And this guy owns most of the company! His point is that looking at mineral oil versus synthetic oil as a chemist he believes synthetic is just that much better. He is a straight shooter and if you talk to him about oil he never talks like a business man, he talks like a scientist.
I think everybody would agree that synthetic is that much superior if they knew how few steps there were from pulling the crude oil out of the ground to sticking it into the bottle, as far as mineral oil is concerned.
