my dad and i narrowed it down to the alternator but a weak battery could be one...but then again wouldnt that mean that the electronical stuff in the car wouldnt work?

umm if its in REALLY cold weather it will do that. I let my car sit for a week in subzoero weather and when i tried to start it it shook and died, and then once i cranked it again it idled like **** and no oil pres above 30psi for like a min... then it slowly got better. In cold, it will seem like EVERYTHING is wrong.

no. things in the car will work even with a bad battery.

see if you can jump start the car and if that works. once you start it remove teh cables, and if the car shuts off its your alt. if it stays running your battery either is bad or may have just drained.

you can either let it charge and test it, or you can take it to a shop for a load test on your battery and also your alternator.

i would not automatically assume the alternator is bad.

Most major car parts stores will test (and recharge) a battery for free. Just got to lug it in to them. I'd do that. I thought my alternator was bad on my teggy but it ended up just being a bad cell in the battery.

So get that battery tested first.

I used to have a 95 Jimmy, the Alternator went out in it.... and ALLLLL the electrical stuff in the car stopped working. I didn't have any gauges, lights, or anything. I was in bad shape. Given, the Jimmy is a domestic, you might be having the same problem. What year is your car? If it is newer, i'd say from about 95 and up, it may cause your gauges not to work. Keep it posted.

ok wow it looks like i need to replace my distributar cap, spark plugs, head gasket, and oil filter + the guy is gonna do an oil change, clean the block and pick me up to pick up the car for only 230.00. I think that is a good price. The guy told me that when he went to take out the spark plug wires and plugs there was oil everywhere lol. Best thing i can have my car back tonight. o yes!

Imma recommend this shop to you guys in madison.

Libby's Garage
918 Stewart Street
Madison, WI 53713

The mechanic is named Joel Duensing hes a very good guy so go there for your stuff!

ummm why does the headgasket need to be replaced? If you have a blown headgasket, I would think that there are other things that need to be checked out to find out why the headgasket blew.

For only $230 I would be EXTREMELY wary of the quality of work and attention to detail this guy has. Usually it costs $300-$500 just to change a timing belt, but this guy is going to pull the entire head?
