Default Need Advice, total newb here :)

Hey,New here, but it seems to be the spot for honda info. Anyway Im looking into purchasing this 92 cx hatchback. b20VTEC, 7al-2 Ignition, complete suspension, Manual trans, runs great/fast. A/C & Heater functional, good stereo.

The car is in good shape except for the paint and the battery is located on the back of the car(which I have never seen).

Anyway, I am totally not mechanically inclined. I am a network security student and dont know jack about cars or engines really. I am not looking to race this thing, and need it for daily driving to get back an forth.

My questions are:

Is this a appropriate setup for daily driving or is this thing strictly for racing?

I have read online that alot of b20vtec owners have issues with burning up their sleeve's (whatever those are) and oil comsumption/burning problems. How likely is it that I will run into these problems?

Again, I dont know how to work on cars except for adding coollant and changing the oil. Will this thing requier alot of maintence beyond an ordinary honda engine like a b16?

Is there anyway to determine how many miles are on the engine? Anyway to determine how many miles are on the tranny.

Any tips/advice of what I should ask/look for before I buy?

The owner wants 4000 for the car and it has had one fender bender indidcated by carfax...

Did a test drive, idle was perfect, shifting (up through 3rd) was smooteh and no grinding. Had a aftermarket exaust with 2.5 inch piping.

Here are some pics if they work:

wel you wont have to worry about things breaking as often if you dont romp on it all day,it sounds like a good deal, plus it will get you up to freeway speeds nice and quick.plus if u decide you want to start racing later you allready have the platform.

well all honestly if your not really going to use thing but for daily driving then i suggest any other car but a honda, they have a very high theft rate, you will be taking this thing to school and work until the day you get followed and its stolen from ya just causing more headaches then its worth. if you accept that responsibilty then thats coo at least you know what your getting into.

second of all you cant tell the mileage really only notice the condition the parts are in, if the motor runs fine without burning any smoke then most likely it will last a pretty decent time just depends how well that b20 was put together and if they changed the rings or did any block work, my guess is its a stock block and they slapped a b16 head on it. its not as reliable as a b16 or gsr longblock that hasnt been taken apart which would be your best reliabilty bet.

as far as you not being mechanically inclined whatsoever why would you even want a car like this that from the looks of it will be requiring some TLC..

lol, hah that is comedy. I appreciate the help and advice, I have been looking for a decent honda for close to six months and this one seems to be in good shape except for the paint. The interior is great and it comes with a system in it. I really think this is going to be a winner, but I need advice as to approaching him about getting it inspected by a third party. I have never bought a car and this is a huge decision considering I saved up for what seems like forever to get almost 5 G's. The problem is, he is a mechanic, the brother is a mechanic, and his dad is a mechanic. So I feel like im insulting him or something by asking to get it thoroughly inspected by a thrid party tuner shop or something.

Any suggestions, anything I should ask before I buy, car has a clean carfax too, which is why I feel this is a quality vehicle.

This is the truth, if you don't know much about cars, or fixing cars rather, I wouldn't go for this. My advice is to go for a stock civic, or other honda that hasn't been modified in any way so it will give you many years of reliable service. It won't give you any mod related troubles. My $.02...

A B20 Vtec would require some machanical skills to keep it running properly. Just buy a stock civic if you think you might be over your head.

just buy a stock Civic and do some homework about modifying, etc.. and when you feel you are ready, pop the car's cherry and start modifying the bitch!

what if i buy this car and have someone install a ls or b16 in it, i know that a b16 is cheap but I can get a rebuilt engine put in over here for about 800 including install. I havent been able to really find a decent stock civic so far....

you cant say that... that all depends on where you live... almost no hondas where im from have alarms.. there is almost no theft into our cars what so ever....

Your better off buying a stock civic like everyone else already said, then IF you want throw a b16 in it...I personaly think it will require too much maintanance(sp)
then you would like in a daily driver

PS. since your a noob i think you only get 5 posts a day(your on 4)
Choose wisely on what your next post is

you wont find better deals for hondas than on honda-tech...

Craigs List

Search by whatever location is closest to you, a lot of good deals there. Good luck

Hey, you guys are saviors

Update: After more digging I have "heard" from someone who knows this car personally that this engine was heavily boosted for along time and had issues with overheating, fuel delivery system and other issues.

I dont think I'm intrested anymore, but thank you and big ups to everyone that was kind enough to give me advice and help me out.

Thanks,

Chad

P.s., If you guys need help with computer related advice (PC's) hit me up, I am a already a+ certified and have my ccna.

If you're not mechanically inclined, it wouldn't be a good idea to buy a car modified by someone else unless you know them very well. You can never know the true history of the car, and if it breaks you'll be screwed. Look around for something stock and not owned by some kid (I say this while I'm selling a car, but it's true most of the time ) Good luck
