Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
I searched around on here and I see that there are plenty of people who say they use it, just like with Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Brad Penn, Castrol GTX, Valvoline, etc.
What I didn't see was people who had any real specific comments about the Rotella, and I also didn't see anyone who had anything negative about it. That could be partially because it isn't too widely used. . .
What makes me interested in it is that I've heard people really swear by it for turbocharged applications, and supposedly some testing has shown it to be top notch, also it has a cold weather friendly viscosity available 5w40.
So, does anyone have anything very decisive to say about it? I know some of you have really studied this issue!
Thanks in advance of course!

I have heard great things about it. A couple of my friends built cars run it with no issues.

All i know about Rotella oil is that my grandfather runs it in his 08 Duramax duallie. I never thought of it as a Honda thing...

Re: Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
Thanks guys!
Yeah, they have a 5w40 available now, so I figured I'd give it a shot in my old engine I'm currently running to get my setup fully sorted, the oil pressure is a little low with 5w30, but I don't want to go too thick when some mornings are around zero degrees F. My little Odyssey (Sp?) battery has been cranking it a little slow. . .
I figure the Rotella should be good with the abuse the turbo dishes out too.
Anyway, I'll give it a shot.

The new bottles of that stuff have a lot less ZDDP in it which is key to not wearing out Cams/Valvetrain in the Honda engines. So look for the old bottles.

5w40 is a big spread. further apart the numbers the more polymers are added and arent as good as say the 15w40 which will have alot less additives beig its not such a wide spectrum as the 5w40
15w40 wont hurt anything. i run 4qt 10w40 and 1qt 20w50 in my car in the winter without any issues we get down to single digits at night some times.

I'm running roller cam/followers, so maybe some of the concern over the ZDDP content doesn't apply so much to me, but what oil continues to have the good additive packages then?
Thanks for the info on the viscosity spread, I wasn't aware of that!

Glad i could help. as for good oils well everyone has their preference. i personally like castrol synthetic or redline. ive used royal purple and mobil1 wasnt a fan of mobil1 in my turbo car. oil is jus so damn thin. idc what its rated if the oil is that thin IMO gonna give problems but i cuold be wrong thats just my opinion. valvoline makes a good syntheitc as well.

Re: Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
i have ran it before in my turbo honda, and never had any issues. I know some engine builders use it for break in because of the zinc and whatever for ease on the cam and valvetrain. they always changed it before the tuning because they have had problems with it foaming in high rpm engines and loosing oil pressure. These were dirt track engines though, i stopped using it after he told me that, but i never had any oil pressure issues revving my b16 to 9k

Good info on the foaming. i wonder what RPM there having issues with. Circle track engines are in the 8-9k range. i wonder if it has somethign to do with the oil pumps vs a honda pump

I have never used the Rotella T, but I use Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40, and also have quite a few friends who run it in there built, boosted cars of different makes (honda, mitsu, chevy, etc) all without a problem. Plus you cant beat the 13 dollar a gallon price. Im sure the rotella T will be fine.

they def weren't reving the dirt track motors to 8 or 9k. These were 15-1 methanol motors, going to 7500 max. He was also reffering to mild street motors too and the only thing he uses rotella for is break in.

That what my friend runs in his DSM.
It's the only thing his tuner recommends. He did mention the foaming, but said it isn't likely

Re: Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
Alright, to kind of take advantage of the good discussion, does anyone have any thoughts on Rotella or whatever else in terms of its resistance to coking up in the bearings? I'm not running a water cooled center housing, so that is kind of important to me. . .
Thanks for all of the input so far!

Re: Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
JUst run RP and be done with it... Yes the ZInc Dithiophosphate (or lack thereof) is a key issue. Rotella is good... but lookie:
I was using Mobile 1 10/30 and my cams and followers were ****ED... Lash adjusted correctly and all.... The Exhaust VTEC followers saw it the worst, but the pri and sec. followers were showoing SIGNIFIGANT wear too. INtake cam pri and sec lobes were ok, but showed minor wear on the vtec followers and lobes.
I saw this decided to try it and have had absolutely 0 issues since with over 12 K on the valvtrain.. Seriously and constantly abused to 8500-9000 rpms... (Built H22)
http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil%20Tests.pdf
Think of your cams and followers being the bearing and metal used in the tests (the damage shown on the metal-which they measured for comparison..also note the PSI resistance of the RP compared to others in the test)... This is an independent test too... Not a RP test. One of my buddies SPONSORED by Bardahl to switched as well... After seeing what it did for me (and others) No bullshit.
JUst somer unbiased empiracal data (and first hand experience)... NOt an assumption. **** works EXCELLENT

Re: Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
Thanks to extralargenog for that link. I read every word of it, and it definitely changed my outlook on some of this stuff.
One thing that seems clear though is that there is a testing process that seems to provide useful results (the one they used in this test), and that therefore there must be more results like this out there somewhere. Anyone got any ideas? I'll try to do a little Googling for it tonight when I have a chance.
Thanks again!

Re: Anyone Ever Have Problems with Rotella-T Oil?
A really good place to read is:
bobistheoilguy.com
I read there ALOT when my cams and rockers were getting all chewed up... Also, learned ALOT of **** about different countries "EPA" standards affecting what lubricants were used and what =dditives were present in their oil... For instance Castrol GTX in Germany has high ZDTP Content (therefore its synthetic package is highly desirable), where as US manufactured does not (due to said EPA regulations)...
I found the posted link while searching too... Ive carefully watched my cams wear adn it has been ALL good wince making the switch, so I jock the RP and definately suggest it!!!
I change my oil about every 1500-2k, but when I dump it out of the Honda its still in good shape!!!
GOod reading, and good luck!
