Changed my oil and transmission fluid today.

Oil level is fine and everything is perfect in that aspect so I know that isnt the cause.

I filled the transmission fluid through the Speed sensor instead of the fill hole after it was suggested in an archived post.

Everything went fine with the fluid but when I drove my car after and the speedometer does not work and vtec will not engage.

Is this normal for the car not to switch over simply becuase the speed sensor is not reading?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

double check and make sure the speed sensor is pluged in properlly, (both electrically and the gears,)

 

So that would fix the speedo problem. Would it also fix the vtec problem?

YES. VTEC won't engage unless you're travelling more than ~15 MPH. I think that also means your rev limiter is around 8000 RPM while standing still.

I can hear VTEC staying off when launching with clutch slipping at 7000 RPM. That always annoyed me.

You musta hit your VSS, check the wires 'n chit.

 

Are you sure you did not drain the motor oil?

Ill have to mess around with the speed sensor and see If I can get it working again.

common mistake is ppl not plugging in the speed sensor, check that 1st and see what happens.

 

i never take the speed sensor off to put MTF... i jus open a bolt on the side above the drain plug. is that ok also?

 

thats the way your susposed to do it, it's just easyer from the top

That's fine too. Some people find it easier to use the speed sensor plug hole and use a funnel to fill the transmission case. Personally, I'll just you that dinky little hand pump that Honda/Acura has (forgot the part number).

I was actually going to ask about this the other day. Every car I've owned I've just used a 100cc syringe from work to fill transmissions/differentials but its a pain in the ***. I assumed someone made a hand pump or something to make the filling easier, just never looked. Nice to know.

this is what i use also

 

be careful with that VSS...it comes apart rather easily. the first time i tried to use the VSS hole, i tugged a little too hard on the VSS and the sensor portion came apart from the housing portion lol

That happened to me also, I think a part from inside the sensor had fallen out. Hopefully I can order a new sensor and not have to order the entire VSS.

 

got it to work yet? could be low on oil. Yeah my vtec doesn't work if i unplug the speed sensor.

 

Problem Fixed:

Some advice to anyone who is changing their transmission fluid through the speed sensor hole:

If you remove the wiring harness (two 10mm bolts) from the actual spindle speed sensor be extremely careful because there is a tiny bronze piece goes from the spindle to the harness.

When I had did it the bronze rod had fallen out but luckily I found it on the garage floor. Saved me a lot of money and even more headaches.

i still have no idea why people do this. a nice funnel works fine for me, and i have been doing the same thing for 10+ years glad you fixed the problem

 

you only need to remove one 10mm bolt, and remove the entire VSS assembly.

But I don't see why people don't go through the fill hole. You don't want to overfill/underfill the tranny

yeah, all too often I see people either break the mounting bolt- they think it's sitting all the way down in the tranny, but it's not, and they snap the mounting tab, and need to get a new VSS...

or they ruin the connection there. The VSS is one of those connections that can't be unplugged all too often...it builds up a lot of corrosion easy..

 

I usually put a funnel over the air plug thingy...yeah, that's it...

All you need to do is remove the 10mm bolt in the back to remove the vss. No need to remove the harness and all that ish. Just unplug it from the sensor and yourset.

Realized that after I had taken both portions of the sensor off
