is about right the more inventory you have the better you will do.
Just my 2cents.

well it take about 30k to open up a 7/11 and a subway sandwich shop under contract.
get 4-5 guys with good credit , and with hookups on venders and get your 1million dollar loan... your set....
just remember more people more arguments about money.

Doing technical work such as tuning cars, and owning a business that does that technical work are two completely different things. If you want to tune cars then get your training and get a job in a good shop. If you want to own a tuning business then go to business school and hire the best tuners you can. Either way is cool. Good Luck!

Im going to have to agree with Victor, owning a shop and working in it will get hard once you start getting busy...I would say make sure that if you want to run a shop make sure to take some business classes at a community college, Itll help out alot...
Justin,
The best way to own a shop in my opinion is to get experience from working in a shop. Take the experience and knowledge of seeing how that shop or business is run and apply it to your new business venture.
Business Management, Accouting, Business Law are just a few off the top of my head that are offered at the Junior College level that will definetely help you get in the right path. I would certainly not jump into a Marathon without training for it first.
There is also a lot of overhead to think about, plan for and organize. Your cost of doing business is one of the most difficult things to control as Profit = Revenue mines all those nasty expenses. Those expenses are far and few between, and certain regulations need to be met to manage all your transactions and this can be an expense as well. (certainly more so if you cannot do your own accouting)
I think it is defintely a great idea, but you are going to need capital and support.

did you just reply to yourself?
did you just reply to yourself?
Better just get a job at one.
The bandwagon is almost dead.
Too many around and no direction.
Most shops can't survive in just tuning.
You end up doing general repair to make ends meet
if you can make a name for yourself and have experiences.
It is hard for someone to trust bunch of newbies messing around.
Dealer's owns now since cars are getting too Hi-Tech.
