Default Smog test 93 hatch w/gsr BAR cert.

Hi Honda tech members, I Failed smog test in cali, This was done 2-speed test, Some details before the test, tire pressure was stock, No fan blowing on radiator, idle speed warm-up, de-natured alcohol, 91 oct. 15deg timing. New cat and o2 On a p28 stock ecu.

Readings at 15mph Co2%-14.5, o2%-0.06
HC-max-93 reading-189
CO-max-0.57 reading-0.52
Nox-max-720 reading 2227 (gross polluter)

Readings at 25mph co2%-15.4, o2%0.0
HC-max-59 reading-58
CO-max-0.55 reading-0.02
Nox-max-774 reading-114 (way below max)

After that reading I flushed my radiator, Changed oil & filter. Not going to run alcohol anymore. Flushed out coolant was nasty, and the oil level was low and black.

My mods, msd ignition kit type r plugs stock gap,CAI,Skunk 2 manifold, ctr cams,dc 4-1 headers,type-r valves. Valve lash set .007intake .009exhaust. stock p28. Hope this is enough info. Also when i got my swap it would throw the knock sensor code. I tried fixing this problem long ago but just switched ecu for a p28.HELP!!!!!!.TIA.

maybe you need the right ecu for the motor and also when you did that skunk intake man did you get rid of the evap purge solenoid. also any check engine lights and missing O2 or old O2?

Hi thanks for the reply,i figured i should use the p72 but i was scared of the knock sensor throwing a CEL. For the skunk2 manifold I originally did not hook up the evap purge soleniod. I actually put it back on because i found out the IAT sensor wire was actually the evap purge. But i never actually got a code with the wire in the wrong sensor.......
Also i did a coolant flush and noticed that my fan never came on......Thermostat must have just broke....which maybe heated up the cylinders during the failed 15mph test.in nox and slightly hc's. My plan of attack is to run seafoam, then check change the thermostat or ect sensor. Anybody got any ideas?TIA

check the fuse for the fan also. often overlooked part. if the fuse is ok test the fan by jumping it. if the fan is good then most likely it is the Tstat or a airbubble in the system or even a bad fan switch

I checked the fuse, looks to be good i think ive ran 87 octane to the point where i got excess carbon build up.but that couldnt be it because i would fail my 25mph test too. im leaning toward my ignition system if not that im checking the fuel system next. TY for the reply.

lose the ctr cams, use gsr plugs gapped to gsr specs, use gsr cams set to factory specs and valve lashes, I definitely reused the gsr intake manifold, set ignition and camshaft timing to factory specs, and get a P72 ecu.

BTw what kinda cat do you buy? 2-way or 3-way?

Two way carsound, Well im not sure of dumping the cams just yet.....Im pretty sure the vtec lobe is all that changes between the b series cams. the gsr manifold i have is all in pieces. Is there a chance that since i passed my 25mph test that the components arent really hurting my emmisions? ive read that skunk2 cams pass emmisisons no problem and they are a tad bit worse for smog than my ctr cams. Im really more concerned with the actual burn process. Ive either got carbon build up, a bad misfire at 1500rpms,or a plugged cooling system. maybe a lil of all the above. Thank you for the reply, any other info is much appreciated.

The gsr motor has an EGR valve and for it to function and do it's job. It needs the proper ecu. The p 28 ecu does not have the option for the EGR valve. Furthermore, hi nox levels is due to hot combustion chamber, lean running motor, or malfunctions EGR valve. I'd suggest to put everything for the p 72 motor and you should be fine.

Hey 'tard, GSR's dont have egr's.

I would switch back to gsr plugs, if there's a difference, also check out the condition of the cap and rotor. Seafoam is a good idea, so is a p72, youll have to address the knock sensor issue but it'll be better in the end. The p28 is probably the likly cause of your possible lean miss at 15k, a lean condition would raise Nox too.

Thanks, im going to check the cap and rotor next. do you think my msd wires can play a part in the missfire too? im thinking the p28 is too lean also...im going to use a b series ecu instead.thank you for the help. Keep em coming.

that's one of your problems. you need a 3-way cat to make it work properly.

I know i need a 3 way but look how good my emissions are on the two way at 25mph. I just got a sick engine and a cat is nothing but a band-aid fix for my problem. Also Im not sure but for my 95 engine i dont think they utilize a 3 way cat. So Whats going on with my 15mph test?? thats all i need. thank you for your information plz bring more. TIA
