Default Idea's for better traction

It is in the 30's here and i just cant seem to get traction above 4000 rpm in first and none in second but she will finally settle down in third gear. It was never this bad before when it was warm. Just curious as to how everyone else is handling the colder weather.

running:
Motor is NA and semibuilt
215/45/16 azenis
ATS final drive
Stock suspension

You have to alter your driving to fit the conditions.

it rarely snows here (wilmington, NC- its on the coast of north carolina for those who dont know) but i have considered lowering my air pressure 4-5 psi to around 27-26 psi. we'll see.

As far as tires go i have tried
bridgestone S0'3's- they were ok
bridgestone ES100's- ok too
and ofcourse azenis- they handle good and hook up good in warm weather but as far as cold-forget it!

i have also considered new enigine mounts.

less throttle!!! or get some snow tires, or even some all seasons, maybe take the bus!!! It would be a shame if you couldn't stop and pushed in the front end

Those are all Summer tires. If you want to go anywhere in the snow you need at least all seasons.

any street radials will be same, engine mounts won't do anything. i've tried drag radials before during cold weather it really helps with traction.. like i said, these tires are dangerous so you have to know the weather, not worth it unless you already have them like i do.. best is to adjust your driving to the weather.

put it this way, last winter i'd spin if i punch throttle it in 3rd on street tires, with drag radials, it would decrease by one gear, i probably still had traction problems in 2nd.. cna't remember. they cost too much to ride at all times

You are dealing with tire/rubber compounds, their differences and effective temperature ranges. Azenis are nice and sticky in the spring, summer and fall when the temps are at least 40 and above. When the temp gets near freezing or colder the rubber on the Azenis and like summer compound tires actually hardens and gets slippery.

4 Season tires are a compromise. They offer decent traction in all seasons both with rubber compound And tread pattern. But aren't great in the summer or the worst winters.

Winter tires and Snow tires offer the best, wet, dry, snow and ice traction for temps 40 degrees and below, some better than others, with some designed more for touring and ice advantages and others for severe mud and snow abilities. Their compound actually sticks better in the cold. Some even have microscopic suction cups that will provide better traction on ice and in the wet. Their treads provide channels for siping and evacuation of water and snow.

Combine your summer tires and freezing temps with an ATS FD and there's no doubt that you'll spin freely anywhere any time. Even when I had Pilot Alpins, the car was no fun sloggin through anything white and slippery with said FD.

I vote for getting at least some capable all season tires since you live somewhere that shouldn't see so much snow and frozen chit.

But I gotta tell ya what a huge difference real Snow tires make. I had an extreme advantage commuting home last night in a snow storm in the beater Altima. I could start, stop, climb and accelerate better, and more safely than most on the road and that included 4x4's with all season tires. I'll tell you just a few of the many accidents I went around in my 25 mile commute. I saw easily 4 cars off the road entirely, 3 facing oncoming traffic after spinning out and at least 9 in chain reaction bumper to fender benders going down slick hills. It was alot of carelssness, and sorta scary to watch but not a big deal when I could control my car. I just had to stay clear of the rest of them.

Don't bother. Just get a set of Michelin MXV4's. Nice and wallowy, but good wet/cold traction. Well, kind of good. At least you won't burn off much rubber while they spin - treadwear = 420

Jesus christ, how hard is it to lay off the throttle?

It's a 1.8L, you're not making enough torque to magically spin your tires driving normally.

Ever tried squeezing?

Btw, does a "215/545/16 azenis" look like?

honestly, the snow tires or studs make a huge difference. shoot, anything better than his azenis will work. i hate azenis on water.

Exactly

I'm baffled by your standards though... S-03's are only okay in your book?
