Default Expired harnesses

I have seen posts on various discussion boards about where expired harnesses can be donated for various things. Did some searches and didn't come up with anything. Anyone on here able to provide some info?

Thanks civicrr. Will go ahead and contact them.

Harnesses typically get a run of about three years these days. Depends on the sanctioning body and the rating of the harness - SFI or FIA.

Does the webbing really deteriorate at a 25% per 6 month rate once installed? I mean compared to a project car that sits for 6 months vs weekend racer vs someone who daily drives them? I read about the exposure to sunlight and what not, just can't comprehend that astounding rate I guess.

Well the death rate of harnesses is most likely based on worst case scenarios..for your safety..

Yeah, I mean when a harness cost $150, its not much to insure your safety in a race car.

I'd like to see how the OEM seat belts are rated! But I think they are so much more strict with racing harnesses, since they are assuming much higher crash and impact speeds than a normal street car.

What sucks is the time frame doesn't (and really can't) take into account usage. Like mine, sitting in a closed box for a year... I've pretty much thrown away half the purchase price assuming a two year life.

Guess that's my fault for buying them when I did... It would be nice if the HPDE events at least ask about their condition...

As I understand the testing- this is continuous time in the sun- a worse case type testing.

A lot of our cars only spend a couple weekends 'out of doors' each summer which should extend the life of our belts. The sanctioning bodies and belt mfgs have no way to control this, much less test for this due to all of the variables involved so they take a conservative approach.

I think the current SCCA belt life spec is a little excessive- two years on non-FIA belts. JMHO.

I agree with ITC Racer. All the tests have been done on the worst extreme, belts sitting in the sun for a full two years. Who's belts do that? If the belt deterioriates that much over 24 days in the sun, then there is surely a manufacturing problem. Though I'm sure the belt manufacutrer's are happy to sell more belts.

Pretty soon, someone might say that I can't wear a closed faced helmet in my autocross car that has an airbag. Oh wait, SCCA already brought that up!
