Default Bad thermostat? I've got a big problem, urgent help needed.

Ok, Yesterday it was damn cold here in Ohio, 6 degrees. Well I helped a buddy do a water pump, and timing belt in his lude yesterday, and when I got done, I remote started my car and started my venture home. It was normal operating temp, when I got in my car. I started down the road and it started to heat up fast, and I also noticed, there was no heat comming out of the vents. I limped the car home, by driving for 20sec. at a time and then shutting it down and coasting, to keep from overheating. Once I got home, I I checked the coolant and it was hot, and low. I filled it back up and there were no aparrent leaks, drove down the road and heated up again, the heater is still not working, and when I got back the overflow was boiling over. The only thing I can think is the thermnostat is stuck closed. I had to drive a car I have for sale, to work today and it has expired tags, and no insurence, so I need to fix this asap. The car is a 88 DX with a 95 EX D16Z6, just for reference sake.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. When I got home I drove it carefully around the neighborhood and let it idle for awhile. Seemed to clear it up... i'm suspecting to much water in my coolant mix and it froze up some.

Someone give us a definite answer though... this sucked and its like 10deg now.. winter is here!

since u live in that cold of weather u might want to use a 50/50 mix,or u can go to your local hond dealer to pick up a jug of pre mix antifrezze, but on the other hand the car might be overheating do to a cloged radiator. to check let the car warm up and check to upper hose and lower if the upper is hot and the lower is still cold, u might have a cloged rad.or the t-stat IS BAD.or another problem that i ran into is that i had the heater hoses or bypass hoses crossed up.hope this helps

Cool thanks for the replies guys. I'm gonna limp it out to my dad's hanger at the airport, and thaw it out there. A little FYI for you guys. Working on cars with a -16deg windchill is fun. I'm thinking I might have had a little too much water in my anti freeze too. I guess I asked this question just in time. 'Tis the season guys, make sure you got a good mix in your radiator. Now I just gotta make it home from work with out getting thrown in jail and getting my corolla impounded.

I've been running the pre-mix for a while now...its just hassle free I did a clutch change in a 90 std in a garage that had a lift, air and "heat" ....it was about -15 that night. if I was missing a lift, or air I could have worked but w/o heat it was 15 min in the van warming up....15 min working on the car

Earlier this year I went snowboarding and my car sat in a snowfilled parking lot for 7 hours. I let the car warm up to operating temp then started heading down the mountain and it started overheating so I pulled over and popped the hood. I saw that my radiator was frozen over with ice and snow so I popped the cap a little to melt it and used some premix to top it off waited about ten minutes then proceeded home. I dont know in your case if it was snowing but do you think you got snow on your radiator and it overheated. Anyways just check out your thermostat and set it in boiling water to see if it opens then you should know if its faulty.

No it wasn't from snow. Also your heat probally worked. I have no heat, and a hot, hot motor. If it isn't the thermostat then it is a frozen ice chunk somewhere, like other's suggested. The bottom hose is not pressurizing so, it has to be blocked. In either case it will be fixxed tonight. I just got to make it home from work w/o being arrested. I put an old AEM licence plate frame over my rear plate that blocks the renewal tag, so mabey that might help my journey.

yea, the thermostat wouldn't cause the heat not to work entirely. You just need to bring it someplace warm to thaw out and you can solve the problem then. Maybe drain your system out entirely and make sure it's filled with only 50/50 and not too much water.

Working on cars in the north sucks. I did a main relay, thermostat, o2 sensor, and EACV replacement couple days ago and it was 19 degrees out. No fun. Ohio's cold man, I was there last winter. Brrrrrrr.

I haven't had the problem since it happened. I"m almost positive it was a frozen chunk of something. I'm going to drain a bit and add coolant into the system.

Oh and you think working in 19 is bad... I'm doing headstuds in my driveway... should be about 0-10 for that fun one..... woooo hoooo..1111111!!!!!!KJKFJDAFLKSD

Well, I believe it was a frozen chunk in the coolant somewhwere. I changed the thermostat but boiled both and both released. I have hot heat, and it doesn't overheat. Hope this helps others in the same boat.
