Default custom undertray/front splitters?

Was searching with no luck to find people who have made custom front splitters and such? I was looking at different materials available, sheet metal, lexan, etc. and im curious as to what people have had the most sucess with. i figure it just needs to be rigid enough to not deform at speed, so urethane might be a little too soft? hrm. any feedback would be appriciated. pics would also be useful.

A prototype can be made using a corrugated cardboard template reinforced with fiberglass cloth/resin on the outside. This is a reallly cheap way to make one as well.

Aluminuim example:

Or TEKLAM a totally kickass aerospace composite:

Ichi, thanks for the pics! B.Crack, most sanctioning bodies in NA don't allow splitters that extend back beyond the front of the fender opening, so check before you make one.

That's my buddy Damian's RX7 . . . very pimpy track day car. He's also made side and rear diffusers out of the same material. Very nice car and custom pieces, but way too rich for my blood.

not sure haven't found anything in the rules but what exactly are the rules in HC for this? You can have one but it just can't extend beyond the front or rear of the front fenderwell?

ah cool, thanks for the pics. So does the fiber reinforced cardboard actually hold up? I would never have thought of that. And yes, regarding class rulings, i planned to just "box off" my front bumper. Does anyone have any advice as to how far the splitter should extend from the front of the bumper? just as far as possible within class rules? I dont really have wind tunnel access so i figured my best bet would be to copy a sucessful car's measurments, haha.

and just out of curiosity, are there any pics of the side bars and rear diffuser? that car looks pretty cool.

The carboard/ fiberglass will actually work. He uses it for Radiator ducting in the front bumper and normally takes this car on trips to 160+MPH at race tracks. It is very stable material. You can rivit it to aluminum brackets and so on, even use DZUS fasteners.

No side shots of the aero pieces that I can find.

Rear diffuser with tow hitch (to tow a small 2 wheel trailer to carry tires and toolbox. Yes, he drives this race car on the street/highway to race venues all over the midwest)

It says the splitter can't extend rearward of the front wheel well opening. So that splitter would be legal.

here is mine its about half way done. I use some 5" wide 8 foot long and alittle less then 1/32nd thick.

I took 1 inch of the aluminum and bent it over to a 90 degree angle then took the middle of it and riveted it to the middle of the bumber worked my way out from the middle and made slits in bent part, as needed.

the undertray part will be made out of alumalite, i took some thin plastic that i had orignally bought to use as the under tray but it turned out to be too flimsy. Worked out ok though because it was easy to make a JIG out of.

I purchased the Aluminum from a local metal store called "blue ribbion supply Co." and i purchased the Alumalite from a friend who can get it cheap locally. But check your phone book for a sign supply store and you should be able to get it there.

would it be worth the time and money to develop front and rear diffusers for civics? If it will be then I will let my company try and get them going. Just let me know what you want them made of and I will try and get some designs done this winter. These will be for 92-95 EGs at first then the EJs then whatever else I can get my hands on car wise. If there is enough of a wanting of them and I can get some good ideas I could produce these through my company.

So far I have only done one major modification to the front tray:

My last splitter/airdam is probably still somewhere out in the field to the left of VIR's main straight. If you can find it, you can have it. It probably looks somewhat like Travis's after his "modification".

As bad as it looks, I just took it off the car and pounded everything flat with a BFH. Other than needing a fresh Krylon job it's as good as new. to aluminum.
