Default Why would moonroof shatter?

I have a 2005 Accord with 2k miles and driving down the highway this morning, without warning, the moonroof shattered. No traffic nearby, no sign of any object -- and I'm not sure how an object should fly up the hit the moonroof in a way that could break it, anyway. It was about 5 degrees out when it happened. Any idea what could cause this? The cold? We were fortunate that only a few small pieces of glass fell into the car. To the dealer tomorrow, but I was hoping someone might have thoughts on this. Thanks.

So if only a few pieces fell in the car, it apparently blew OUT? What position was it in when it was broken?

The only random things I can think of is pressure changes mixed with perhaps a small crack in the window filling with water and freezing.

If it blew in i'd say you got sniped by a bb gun or an icicle or something.

Does anyone know if it's normal for a moonroof to blow out at speed?

Thanks for the response. The moonroof was closed. Maybe "shattered" is too strong a word... there are two long cracks coming from the back in the middle spreading out in about a 45 degree angle toward the front corners, and "splintering" everywhere, but 95 percent of the glass stayed in place. A few small pieces fell subsequently, but after the shade was closed. We were on the highway, driving fast, in the middle of nowhere -- no icicles, no nothing. I can't imagine there was an object such as a BB that hit it, not where we were.

maybe the temp inside the cabin(hot) compared to the outside(cold) caused too much stress.

Could be... but then obviously something was wrong with that glass.

Yea thats why I suggested that there was some water that cracked the glass. Water expands when it freezes, so that might be your problem. Since it's an 05 i'd take it to the dealer and give em hell.
