Default Tips for removing stubborn engine damper nut ??

I'm trying to pull my engine damper to replace my tensioner but the frigging nut won't come out !! I tried an electric impact gun with no luck and I'd like to know if there's a good way to keep the crankshaft from turning while I pull some muscle with a breaker bar ?? PLEASE HELP !!

can you stick a rod of some sort in the fw opening and then try a breaker bar on the nut.

Is that even safe???

I'm not working on the tranny/clutch side and it would probably be more trouble than help to access the FW .. good idea though

As soon as I'm done with dinner I'm going to try the breaker/hammer combo again .. maybe I'll have better luck after a good meal

Any other suggestions ??

Yeah, eat, that'll help.

What kind of electric impact gun? Do you know the ft-lb rating?

Craftsman A/C impact gun, rated at 240lbs torque. I actually went and bought this gun specifically to help me with the damper nut .. I'm upset about it so its going right back to the store seeing how I paid $179 for it and it didn't work.

How persistent have you been with the gun? I would grab a beer, turn the radio on to the SF/WAS football game, and hit that thing for the next 20 minutes.

Then return it.

I assume you squirted WD40 before dinner? That might soak in and help. Good luck, I hate getting stuck on stupid **** like that.

One idea, I've used a jack (hydraulic or otherwise) to push a wrench when I didn't have the leverage or strength. You might wanna fiddle with that.

Caveat emptor, YMMV, IANAM, etc. etc. Don't break anything.

breakerbar + hydro jack = even better

It looks like a thick bar with a chain that you can hook around, then push down on the bar, and wha-laa! its not going anywhere. Then, take a 2-3ft. braer bar, and a 19mm SNAP-ON socket to take it off. Dont be scared to lean really hard on it, if anything breaks its the socket. Which is replaceable for free. i snapped 3 sockets on a crank pulley that was torqued to 1200 ft. lbs. almost snapped the last one then i found out it was loosened. and it took 3 people to finally crack it loose.

good luck, i hope i helped.

Pulley, dampener, harmonic balancer, blah blah. Yeah, that's what he's talking about.

Edit, Wait a minute, that's what I was assuming... crankshaft pulley. Do you need to remove it to get to the tensioner?

yes
because you need to remove the timing belt cover, which is impossible to do without taking off the pulley

best thing to do is get a crank pulley holder

This really could be THE most asked question on H-T.

If you don't have a good 450+ lb-ft impact gun, and you don't have the special tool, and you're not willing to remove the flywheel inspection plate so you can use a breaker bar, use a smoke wrench. Heat the bolt until it's red hot, let it cool, then try your impact gun. If that doesn't work, you might give a second thought to investing 5 minutes of your time to remove the fw inspection plate.

You need this (+ lots of liquid wrench + some heavy set cojones + someone to assist) to make your life a bit easier:

my friend has that moroso tool (i think i still have it) if you need to use it (i think he lends it out to people) . but you gotta pay the price of the tool, shipping, and like $5 extra.

you will get your money back (except the $5 rental fee) when you return the tool.

http://www.autopart.com/TOOLS/...2.htm

I have this one, its a whole lot cheaper than the moroso tool, seems to work just fine for me, as 50 percent of hondas have stuck dampener bolts that wont even come off with a 3/4 impact wrench...

My 240lb Craftsman gun wouldn't get it off. I got the Earthquake gun from Harbor Freight for $79 and it does 625lbs. Worked like a champ.

Well.. after a tough Saturday night and early Sunday morning I've put everything back in the car and I'm driving to a friend's shop to use a proper air impact gun to get this nut off.. It sucks that I spent all this time and effort and I could not finish the task because of this nut !! Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it guys !!

BTW, Fat Bastard, do you know Harbor Freight's web site url ??

sometimes a bolt just won't let go

I had an LS engine this week that wouldn't let go of a crank bolt even with a 800 ft/lb impact gun
