Searched confused scared CRX HF swap problem OBD1
WTF is going on with my car?!?!
I get CEL codes 3, 4, 6, 10, & 17. coolant, map, air temp, CKY, & VSS.
I checked the sensors they all come up good.
I changed the ECU to another P72.
I changed to a brand new distributor.
All the engine harness to body harness plugs appear to be together.
I think the speedo cable is unpluged which explains the VSS.
Seems to be a wiring problem. The only thing is, I didn't do anything special to the harness except extend the wires to reach the sensors.
I used a Boomslang harness.
The only thing I can think of is that someone may have sold me an Si harness.
When I do a continuity test to see why the CKY code is on I get no continuity between the dizzy plug and the ECU.
WTF!!!!
Is it because it's an HF, bastard car of the EF family?

The map sensor appears to be not getting through to the ECU. I was thinking there might be a plug disconnected but I can't see any plug in the route for the MAP plug.
HELP PLEASE

check continuity in the harness itself, and look at the main engine harness connectors on the shock towers and see is the wires stay the same color. Sounds like a si harness to me...
GET THIS!!!
I was going through unplugging sensors one at a time to see if it made a difference and when I unplugged my O2 half the codes went away.
I switched the two black wires on the O2 but when I plugged it back in the codes came back. I unplug the sensor again and the codes go away. I mated the colors like in the instructions. Could the O2 be bad or do you think the instructions are wrong?

Wire it up just as the instructions state. The people with the older version of the harness have to wire up the distributor differently than you will.
All of the harnesses we build are tested on a wire harness test computer. The chances that something is wrong in the harness is very unlikely.
Do some continuity tests on your engine harness. It sounds like your engine harness has a short in it somewhere and is causing all the problems simultaneously.
If you would like to send it back to us to be tested again, we can do that. We have sold hundreds of these harnesses and the testing computer has never been wrong.

88, 89 and 90-91 engine/chassis harnesses are slightly different. Mixing them is not a good idea.
What engine/chassis harnesses do you have?

I think that is going to be my problem. The engine harness is an unknown HF harness, maybe even an Si. I've been trying to find a breakdown of the firewall plugs so I can test them and compare them to my 89 Hf harness.
I need plugs C210 C212 and C211. My manual is a cheapo and it doesn't break these plugs down. I think the pinouts are different.
The O2 sensor problem was my mistake. After I reset the ECU the codes were gone but once I started it they came back.
I just checked B22 & D22 and I think they might be different but it is too dark and cold outside to look at, plus I'm getting a headache from studying this. I switched B22 and D22 and they seemed correct but now I tested them again and they seem reversed ARG!!
If anyone can post the pinouts of the firewall plugs for the 89 CRX HF and all the other CRX MPFI models please please please do.

all those codes in sequence means the car is going to explode. RUN! lol
OK here's today's update and request for help.
I hooked a wire to each plug that was throwing a code, coolant temp, air temp, map temp, CKP. I checked continuity to the ECU. I found a few wires that were off. I have no way to explain the problem. The car ran fine with the HF engine but the new engine would run in limp mode. The negitive for the coolant and the air temp are the same wire and they seemed to be in the wrong place so I moved them. They seemed to be wired to the CKP sensor. I moved 2 or 3 wires around and the sensors checked out. I get 5 volts where I should and they are grounded where they should be. SO now the ECU should be happy. I reset the computer and try to start it. It cranks and cranks but never starts. It is firing because every now and then it fires, runs for like a split second and stops.
I checked the codes again and there are none. I switched ECUs again, no help. I tested the new distributor again, still good. I hooked up my timing light to each wire and it flashes while I turn it over. I can hear the fuel pump prime. Pumping the gas pedal doesn't help. Every now and then my MAP CEL comes on. I tested the wires to the map, they are correct but the engine just won't start.
AT LEAST WITH THE 5 CODES ON IT BEFORE, IT WOULD RUN!!!
Now no codes = no run

Does anyone know what sensors the ECU is running the engine on while in Limp Home Mode or how it works?
It used to run like 12 hrs ago.
I'm not sure what year HF harness I have here but it is not 100% the same as the one on my old engine. I know it is an HF harness because it has a 3 hole plug near the coolant temp sensor for the EGR and I'm pretty sure the colors for the driver's side firewall plug match the one in the HF picture.

As far as I know I already bought the harness that matches my car. It has HF only plugs and HF colors at certain plugs.
I had to repin my firwall plug so that the signals come out to match your harness B15 and D15 were opposite as well as the last pin on the B plug was opposite to the last pin on the D plug. It almost seems to me that the swap harness was made wrong. I am trusting that you made the harness correctly but somehow my 2nd CRX HF harness is different than the rest. If you're so sure that my second HF harness is the problem then show me Mr. Wiring Expert where HF harnesses are different between the years because nothing says a second HF harness won't have the exact same problems.
If I stop now and go hunt for another HF harness, that will take more days to find it, around $125 shipped, solder more plugs on, laying in the snow plugging it into the engine, and if it still has the same problem I will lose my mind. If I trace the D15 and B15 plugs back and if they don't match, I don't know what I will do then, while in that state of mind.
Every site I go, everywhere I read says HF harnesses are all the same. You are the only one who said they are different. So please oh sage of wiring wisdom, show me how they are different. I will gladly repin the harness to make it work. SHOW ME WHERE.
I didn't make any wiring for this car. I wrapped it around the back of the engine and plugs that didn't reach I lenghtened. I checked what sensors they were plugged into on the old engine vs. the new engine and the only one I was unsure of was the fan switch but since the fan doesn't come on when it's unplugged I'm fairly sure it's correct.
I'm not reinventing the wheel here. The old engine came out in 1 hr. The new engine went in the car in 3 hrs. Lenghtening the wiring took 4 hrs with solder and shrink wrap. I have been diagnosing the codes for 14 days and now that they're gone the car won't start anymore and now it is snowing. Forgive me if I seem rude but I've had enough. I am ready to contact my credit card and have them stop payment on your harness then use that money to buy someone else's harness and see if the pinouts come out correct then.

Just to say it again. You are using the wrong engine harness.
I am looking at the Helm's wiring diagrams for the 1988, 1989 and 1990/1991 CRXs right now. If you would like to contest the accuracy of these diagrams with Honda Motor Company, I'm sure you'll be well received.
The differences in the engine harnesses are significant enough that repinning one would require major effort. Explaining the process of repinning one to another would require pages of explanation and many pictures.
These differences start with differing pinouts for the cylinder position sensor, iat, and ect. That's just after about 2 minutes of looking.
If you try another brand of conversion harness, you will have the same problems.
Every harness we sell is tested on a wire harness testing computer. This tester verifies every pin to pin connection. All harnesses shipped are correct and 100% guaranteed to function properly.
If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, please contact us for a full refund.
Otherwise, get a harness that matches your vehicle year. '88, '89, and '90/'91 are different.
Thank you and have a merry Christmas.

Well this looks like it could be valuable information.
How about if you scan the pages from the 88-89 and the 90-91 manuals that show the pinouts of the firewall plugs?
As long as it shows what pins get what signals I can repin it to match my 89.

The diagrams show all wiring from ecu to engine. They show what wires go into what plug (C151/C210, C153/C212, C152/C211) but not a specific plug location break out. I do not know if that is broken down in any OBD0 Honda/Acura manual.
