Car pushing RPM's and not accelerating
I have a 98 Honda accord, 4 cylinder with about 45,000 miles on it. Over the past few weeks it has been rather cold but my car has been acting weird. When I leave my house in the morning I will accelerate and my car will push 3000-4000 RPM's and not accelerate at all. It only happens for a few seconds but it doesn't seem right. Also, once at a stop light, I tried accelerating and my car was pushing almost 5000 RPM's and standing still. I shifting into neutral and back intro gear and it was fine but I don't think this is normal.
Any help would be greatly apprecitated.

is it auto or manual? do you drive it very hard? if it's manual, you've fried the clutch. if it's auto, the clutch bands are probably burned up from hard driving. there are several questions that need to be asked, but I'm out of time to ask.
It's automatic and it was my brothers before mine who did drive it pretty hard. If that is the problem, the clutch band that is, how much am I looking at. I'm hoping the transmission isn't the problem so this is a good sign.
thanks for the info and a follow up would be great

I hope not man. I gotta go to college in like 6 months and can't afford that. Hopefully somebody can diagnose my problem but I'm going to have it looked at next week.
Hate to say it but you need to find a good transmission shop. There are a few different things that could be the culprit and you may get off easy. Cross your fingers that its not worst case seniario and you need a rebuild. Have you at least checked to make sure the tranny fluid level isn't low?
**** those auto trannys are all over in the junk yard you probaly pick one up for like $200 and swap it out in like a day or two also look at your axles one of them (the short one likely) or both might be bad.

The short gears of the H22 will probably kill the gas mileage... IMO the h23 tranny mates better to the F-series engines.
Also, I had somewhat of a similar thing happen to me, but I had a bad o2 sensor that caused the problem... do you have any Check Engine Lights?

that's what I'd do
All the more reason to get a stick, less chance of tranny problems and you can rebuild yourself.

No lights on. My Maintence lights blinks for like 5-10 seconds when I start my car but I believe that is because I am over so many miles. There's a junk yard near me so I'm going to go down there this afternoon and see what I can find. Someonew mentioned something about a clutch belt earlier in the topic but none else did....could that be the problem. Hopefully I haven't fried the transmission because that would suck
clutch bands? What the hell is a clutch belt, figment of a crooked mechanic's imagination!
If it blinks you're probably right on the check engine light, still it never hurts to check before you dish out the dough. Some auto parts store, Advanced/Parts America for example, will scan your codes for free as long as you know where the jumper is for it (usually the blue plug behind the glove box). Yeah it's really not worth it to rebuild the transmission, but make sure you get some sort of warrantee on the used one. Or...depending on how endevorous (sp?) you get maybe convert it to a stick.

that thread have anything to do with my problem. I'm going to bring it to a Honda dealer tommorow or see what they have to say. I'm told by a friend that a tranny service where they replace the filter and whatnot should solve some problem. I just don't understand how my tranny could already be gone by normal use. I'm sensing their is a problem and hopefully it wasn't on my end.

clucth belt? the honda automatic transmission is just like a manual tranny except its shifted hydraulically. so where the f... is the clutch belt? and what the f... is a clutch belt?
I have bad news if your situation is like mine. My torque converter (according to local honda dealer) was the problem and then the tranny was in terrible shape so I know what you're going through. Sometimes it sticks in one gear or another right? Was the tranny fluid changed every 30k miles? Does it ever make it to 3rd gear? I'm no expert but this is exactly what happened to me and a new transmission from Honda was about $1400 installed which is ridiculous but I was in Atlanta, and I live in Memphis so I was screwed. Anyways, personal problems aside, it sounds like you are headed down the same road. I hope not, cuz that was a bitch of a problem in my life but good luck!

By the way, the way I was driving mine, even though I bought it used, I killed my transmission after about 30k miles. It's all in how you treat Honda's delicate auto transmissions. They are not at all good for pedal-to-the-floor driving, I should know
