cut deadcoils..am i ghetto now?
Here the deal I got some neuspeed sof sports on my 94 coupe and it was suppose to drop it 3/4'' f/r. I put them on good struts and drove on them since april and the rear would not settle. It was the same height in the back as a stock one I measured. I could fit 3 finger in the front wheel well and a fist and 1/4" play in the rear. I finanly decided I had to try and cut a coil of the rear. It looks fine now and the back is only a 1/4" higher than the front. My question is it bad that I cut a coil of? Is it just as bad as cutting stock springs? Has anyone had this problem with Neuspeeds on thier 92-95? It was so bad my car looked like I jack the suspension from some rednecks nova

This is interesting..so now my bushing are gonna wear out...a arms gonna fall off and struts blow cause I cut one coil off hmm..i doubt it. I know its wasnt the best decision but my car was jacked up in the back like 1'' higher. If you could explain to me exactly how its gonan ruin my suspension. When I cut them I used a cut off wheel and did not get the spings hot at all. The ride is fine still. It still has enough spring on there to where I had to compress it to get it on the struts. I dont really see how it could ruing my whole suspension cause its not making my ride bounce up in down like a ricer with sleave coilover kit and blown stock struts.

I pulled the tape measure and measure the tire to wheel well clearance of mine with the neuspeeds vs my moms car with stock suspension. Both cars have same size tires. My cars rear was same as stock in the rear and 1'' lower in the front.

cutting dead coils is fine, ive been doing it, and plenty of people i know have done it for years before coilovers were around. ive never heard of anyones suspension breaking or wearing out because they chopped a coil off of a spring. of course stock shocks cant handle going that low, but dangerous?? WTF, youre in just as much danger as a guy with $2500 Buddy Clubs slammed all the way down.
sportlines cut two coils=perfect drop

dead coils are called dead coils b/c they don't do anything. they're only there to fine tune the ride height. are you sure that you didnt switch the front and rear springs? btw, SofSport springs aren't supposed to lower your car much at all. they're meant to retain max. ground clearance while improving handling with stiffer rates.

I dont know if I've ever read more BS in my life.
How do all these kids think we used to drop cars in the early 90's?
Nobody had coilovers, that **** was unheard of. Everyone cut. You will be fine, dont worry about anything, I've had cut coils on cars for years without problems.
Dont listen to these kids spoiled with coilover luxury. You'll be fine.

Yeh I got em on right. Ive had 3 sets of springs on this thing now. I needed the sof sports for soft ride and increased ground clearance but as said earlier the back was as high as stock and front was at least 1" lower. I knew these kids had to be wrong telling me cuttin the dead coils in the back was dangerous. Thanks for the peeps lettin me know for sure that what I did was ok. Just for conversation would Cuttin the fronts would be bad though since there are no dead coils?

I've cut 2 coils up front, had the car for more than 3 years now and no problem. Drop is 1.5" and just the way I like it since there are terrible pot holes and humps from where I live.
I've ran the car at top speed a couple of times, a lot of deep **** pot holes, no problems. The ride is even better than before. The bouncyness got less.
BTW I have a 95 hatch.

I cut my stocks at first with stock struts, no difference in ride quality. I bought skunk 2 coilovers and its really stiff in the rear and it almost sucks, but I wanted to go lower then I really could with cut springs. And yes back in the day everyone cut their springs and people still do. The reason cars with cut springs seem so bouncy now is they cut them so far it rides on the bump stops or the struts are blown. It is infact safe to ride on cut springs. Just some of you guys are so young that it is almost unheard of since you go your licence in the past 3 years.

Yeah most people will think that. But my shock absorbers are still factory, quite old. Since I lowered the car, the normal rest point of the shock pistons moved to a lower position, thus the sleves are not that worn. So I guess that is why the ride got better. Just my understanding, I could be wrong though.
The downside is that the stock springs are softer so at first my tires rub during fast cornering. Now its gone, msut have worn our the part of the wheelwell that rubs.

I second that. Some people cut so much that the struts do not pre-compress the springs anymore. Or they go so low the shocks hit the end and gets blown. Cutting 1 or 2 is fine. As long as the struts still compress the springs when the assembly is out of the car.

So, let me get this straight. You cut the coils, NOT knowing if it had any side effects or if it was safe, and THEN ask if i twas ok to cut them here on Honda-Tech?
Let me ask you this. Would you **** a hooker without a condom and THEN ask if she has any STDs? I think not...
Seek mass transportation.

Okay so el cheapo ebay coil-overs with dangerous collars/sleeves with shitty collapsing springs is better than a good lowering spring with one top coil cut off?
I disagree.
I'd personally never cut coils, but I've ridden on some like the ones being discussed that didn't ride bad at all provided they had good struts.
Why so angry bro?

yeah i wouldn't worry about it too much.
yeah cuting springs is bad, for a reason,
but you have to know that reason.
and the reason is, you increase springrate when you cut them,
so people who lower alot with cut springs end up with ridiculously high rates,
and rarely do they have shocks to support such rates.
thats why rides turn to ****.
but people really shouldnt be just hollering "oh hell naw" "oh no he didnt!" just cuz you cut a smidgen off your springs.
it's not like if a spring is cut in the least it ruins the integrity of your entire suspension.
alittle of anything isn't going to do much, because it is just that, a small ammount.
a small ammount will yeild a small change.
it's just common sense really.
