Default Body work and Paint on my project (HIGH SPEED ONLY! 25+pics)

UPDATE: Page #2 now has "better" pics of the final product.

So I got this 91 STD last summer and decided to take an Auto Body and Paint class through the local community college. The car had all kinds of dings in it that needed to be taken care of. Although there was nothing wrong with the paint, I wanted something new. The car just needed an over all freshening up.

Before:

Lets get to work:

Taping off the jams, ect, and applying paint to them:

The taping took sooooo long. Took about 5 and half hours by myself. I wanted it just right though.

the hatch...blurry *** pic

inside the hatch. AHH, THE GLARE!

Taping and Painting the body:

in the booth

taping **** off

crew of peeps helping out. it took less than an hour with everyone helping!

the pimp himself in the cap

almost done

fireman getting ready to paint the bitch

a little sealant/primer

a little paint. yum

somewhere in there some clear gets laid down...

Final product:

the pic is way glary but you get the idea

There was a slight run in the clear. Any tips on how to get it out?

Wow, that was cool dude. Good job on the work man

I like how you put a lot of pics in there, and they were actually in chronological order, unlike some of the confusing things I've seen on here...

That silver color on the hatchback looks cool, what are you going to do to it next man?

How much run do you have? If its a little try color sanding and buffing if its a lot try redoing the section of the clear where it ran and then color sand the whole car.

the final color is Dodge Viper Brilliant Silver. Cost wasnt too bad at all...it was the cost of the class and $180 for the paint. (that was at cost + 10% through the class)

Not exactly sure what the actual cost of the class was as I took 3 others at the same time. But all the tools, materials, sand paper, paint booth, ect... was included in the class.

That's pretty damn good work. You should be able to sand the run out since it was in the clear. I want to take an auto body class at the local tech college, but they don't have night classes.

1200 grit paper wet sanded, not too much. and then a good once over with a buffer and a product By 3M called "Perfect it". Just be careful not to get too crazy with the buffer or you'll burn though the paint. When your done the car will look like GLASS!!

And while we are showing off paint jobs, here is my rex i painted like a year ago.
Ghost flames

The fender and Motor.

Kinda dirty but it shows off the flames real nice.

Jason.

I don't get it...

It takes 20 minutes to tape off the lights... and 10 minutes to take them all out. It's free, you reach parts you won't with the lights in, and you can paint the bumpers while they're not on the car.

In short...less ghetto.

It's really nice to see someone else doing this. I'm in an autobody and paint class next semester, so I can work on my bug. Once I learn the in's and out's of body work and paint I will be giving my EF sedan a new, stock paint job.

Congrats, it looks great.

One more question, how many hours a week did you work on it? I'm doing six hours a week minimum. I hope to get the body and paint (semi-gloss black) done in one semester.

I would of def liked to have done this, but there would of been more prep involved in doing so. There is a lot of dirt and debree that I would of had to deal with. Im not going to be driving around with my lights and bumpers out anyway so you cant see under them.

Time was my biggest enemy...there were a lot of cars that needed to get into the booth that night and it didnt take 20 minuets to tape the lights off lol.

In short...thanks for the input.

I agree... you used way too much tape. Tapelines sucks.

Removing the bumpers, and lights and mouldings along with re-assembly should have only taken an extra hour.

How many coats of primer did you use? That looks like a ghetto paintjob, when you primer a car, you should wetsand the primer, Primer the car 3 times, 3 coats each time, wetsand with 1500 between.

A drip in the clear? Eww.. Get someone who knows how to spray.

I would like to see this car upclose.. Bet something from Macco would have came out better based on the pics/details of the work

And IMO it looked better before, atleast it had contrast. Now its just blah.

Although I applaud the DIY, I agree with this statement.

Silver isn't very flattering on an EF hatch. At all, IMHO.

And the lack of contrast kills it!
