Puzzling Auto tranny question
98 accord 4cyl, 2.3l auto tranny. Haveing shifting problems. Well, here is the situation. the tranny shifts very smoothly into first, but refuses to shift into second. However, if driving at low speeds, sometimes it shifts into second, but within micro seconds, shifts back to first. Like, it refuses to move to second and hold. Just can't figure what's up with this. Any help ?
Is your check engine light on or the "D4" light flashing? If so then you may have a solenoid problem. If neither one of those is on then you may have an internal problem with the tranny getting ready to go.
Well I read the code by way of jumper.
Here are the results:
1. All the time teh "D4" is flashing
2. First i read "7" long flashes
3. After the first long seven flashes, the light goes away for few seconds then Iread the following flashes
a. Long flashes = 7
b. Short flashes = 4 ( or could be five, they go by very quickly)
So, can anyone tell me what's going on.
Thanks

d4 was flashign when i ran out of coolant one time.....
this may sound really dumb, but have you checked your tranny fluid? this could cause both of your problems if you were out of fluid....

You will need to do more then just jump the wires. If the D4 is flashing with a code, you need to get the correct OBD-II code. It will be p with 4 numbers after it. Probably p70--. Once you have this code you can see exactly what is trigering it. Post the code and I can check my manual for ya to see what it say's
Just came back from advance auto parts and they did a scan fro me. Here are the DTC codes:
1. P0171 system Too Lean (Bank 1)
2. P0730 Gear Ration Incorrect
DTC Pending (codes) No Faults detected
I will be gone for an hour, but everybody please continue. I need help from everyone here.

P0730 is a problem in the tranny shift control system. Someone who's actually had to work on auto trannys has to give more detail, I've never had to mess with that.
Only a guess: Auto trans linear solenoid. The part is aprox. $150. for a Civic so I would guess the Accord part is about the same cost. This is a very simple Do It Yourself part change. You need to flush the trans fluid first.
Honda Auto Trans Flush : 1 case (12 qrts) Honda ATF $50. 1 new drain washer $1.
*** Use Honda ATF *** This is not hype it makes a difference.
1) Put the front of the car up on jackstands with the wheels off the ground. Put a large container under drain plug.
2) Remove the transmission drain plug (3/8" drive ratchet works fine). Let transmission drain and wipe sludge off drain plug.
3) Reinstall drain plug and snug (not tighten). Fill transmission with three quarts of ATF.
4) Start engine and shift into drive. Gently accelerate and let transmission upshift through the gears (don't go over 50 MPH).
5) Step on brakes and bring speedo to 0.
6) Shift into reverse and accelerate to 20 MPH.
7) Bring speedo back to 0 with brakes. Shift to park and shut off engine.
8) Repeat steps 2 through 7 TWO MORE TIMES.
9) Drain the transmission once more. Reinstall drain plug and tighten firmly (don't forget to reinstall crush washer).
10) Remove jackstands and put vehicle on level ground.
11) Fill transmission with 2 1/2 quarts of ATF. Start engine. Shift to drive, then reverse, then put back in park and shut off engine.
12) Check transmission fluid level. Top off if needed to bring fluid level to the top of the crosshatch marks on the dipstick

I would give a call to the dealership on this. There is a TSB out on hard shifting and P0730 for civics and such regarding the linear solenoid and clogged passages. It may apply to you.... Could be fixed free of charge under warranty or goodwill.
