I started up my car today, and when i tried to shift into reverse, the shifter would not budge? The shifter is really rigid and will not go into this gear. What could be wrong. I tried with the engine on/off and nothing.

By the way, it shifts perfectly in all other gears (1-5)

The shift gate could be locking or the synchro is going.

had this happen to my car.. The face of 5th gear gets ground down, and it will not let the car go into reverse.. No real fix short of hundreds of dollars.. You can get away with it and pull hard sometimes, or sometimes it does actually slide into gear.. Its pretty common with prelude trannies, thats why I tell everyone to take it easy on them, because they are weak..

 

Laughin - I take it that /m means no message.... I guess he meant that his only message was in the subject line of his post, which said "what is the shift gate"

 

Ahhh...Nice detective skills. The shift gate keeps you from down shifting into Reverse from 5th.

When was the last time you changed your tranny fliuid? this also has happened to me 5 times in the 3 years i hav have had my Lude. I do alot of road racing, and missing 3rd gear always makes my car not want to go in reverse. Whenever this happens i changed the tranny fliud and everything wsa fine. Also try not to be to hard on the tranny 3 and 5th are the weekest syncros in the lude tranny. I had the 5th replaced just after 19k miles, with the grinding recall honda had. Also use the old school method put iti n first move up and then put itin reverse. If this two do not work then i guess you need a new tranny!!!!

 

The next time you start you car, rev the engine a little then try to put in gear again. If that doesnt work then change your tranny fluid.

Thanks for all the input. The tranny fluid was changed about a week ago. I always use Genuine Honda MTF. We had the tranny opened up today and found that the bronze colored rings in both the 1st-2d gear synchronizer sleeve set and the mainshaft third-gear set are exteremely worn to the point in which reverse will never engage. Does anyone know if these are available separately? Honda sells them as kits including all applicable parts.

The gear set for 3rd (mainshaft) is honda part number: 23442-P16-315
The 1-2 Synchronizer sleeve set is honda part number: 23521-P16-315

If anyone knows where i can get those bronze colored looking rings, without having to buy the entire assembly, email me.

Yes, i actually know Mike at Hparts.com. We have been buying parts from them for several years. The honda diagrams specify that it is a set and the parts are not available separately. I knew that from the start and when i asked him he said the same thing

Mark let me look at my parts book and see if i can get the part numbers for those rings. Bro i am sure you can order that **** seperatly. I looked in it last week and in the tranny section every peice had its own part number and it looked like it can be ordered seperatly and not as a whole kit.
