HELP..broken VSS increasing vehicle mileage
Everytime I'm driving more than 70mph, the speedometer starts sweeping up and down. So if i'm actually going 70mph, it'll be moving back and forth rapidly between 70mph to 100mph. Today I noticed that the car's odometer increased dramatically because of the faulty VSS. Has anyone else experienced this? My friend reset his trip meter and he went 67 miles. When I reached teh same destination as him, my trip meter indicated 122 miles. The trip meter goes along with the car's odometer, so I'm adding unnecessary mileage to my car. Does anyone else have experience with this? Please help. If I replace the VSS, will this solve everything even though i've added unnecessary miles to my car already?
EDIT: The trip meter, odometer, and speedometer go together so i have added an extra 400 unneccesary miles to my car.

If you replace the VSS it will automaticly roll back the milage that was put on your car for no reason and a distressed 6 foot 2 inch model will end up on my doorstep tonight. Another option is to put the car on jack stands and put the drive train in reverse like Ferris Beuler did.
I THINK....Until you get this sensor fixed, unplug it to keep the miles from rolling. However, when you do this, you will not have VTEC or know how fast your going. This will throw a code and put your car in a 'safe' mode which will disable a few things.

The ECU shouldn't go into limp mode without a VSS, just no VTEC, speed etc, unplug it if it worries you or just fix the thing already and buy a new VSS.

Well it is not like you are adding actual miles to the car lol.

If you do unplug it your car will die while you are driving once and a while but will start right back up a second later. My VSS did the same thing for a while before totally crapping out on me but I never noticed the miles jumping up.

Replace it and it should be fine or try to fix it. Most likely it got wet and is having a hard time making a connection. Just take it out and clean the plug and the leads on the sensor.

I thought it's the opposite?
When the CEL is thrown with an unplugged VSS, the ECU disable VTEC and runs rich to keep it safe.

Speaking from experience, the ecu does go into limp mode without the VSS.

More than likely it's not a bad VSS, but the VSS connector. Check for corrosion on the connection pins, and/or bad pins in the plug. At least, that was the case when I had the exact same issue.

Maybe you're just spinning the tires, and your speedo is jumping up because of that.
Check the VSS connections (and get a new one if it's bad).
