it's unlikely that a d15 or any mass-produced honda engine does it. it's possible to make/do, but costly (many more parts, etc.), and not worthwhile, even from a performance standpoint, especially when (i think that) Jack from P1 Auto has already managed to get Toda VTEC Killers to idle ~750 rpm (w/itbs- actually prolly an easier combo to get to idle decently than the same cams w/a plenum).

you can make an 'infinitely variable' setup, where the rockers themselves shift to vary the lift and duration with one cam profile.

you can, of course, engage your vtec as many times as you like in any given gear if you let the rpm and engine load drop while on the high lobes before getting back on the gas (or if you trigger VTEC with a switch ala MSD or VAFC, you can switch it on/off as much as you like.

actually, there is such a thing. The jdm d15b(vtec) comes in 2 variations. there is the 92-95 d15b(vtec) which is quite similar ti the usdm d16z6 motor (besides the 1.5 liter status), and there is the 96-up d15b(vtec) that is suspected to be(I've never taken one apart) quite similar to the d16y8. The thing about the latter is that is has both vtec-e and regular vtec. The motor runs on only one of the two intake valve down low in the rev-range under partial throttle(12-valve mode)... If given more throttle input, the motor will switch to the 2 intake valves working properly(16-valve mode), and when the rpm climbs to a certain point(I suspect 5200 rpm, same as y8) it will operate in vtec mode like the regular z6 and y8 do.

This motor is not any more performance oriented than a regular y8, but it does save you money by using less fuel in 12-valve mode. I have heard rumors of people getting 45-50 mpg with these, although I don't know if they have the computer to operate the 2 vtec "stages".

do you still have the d15b ecu. I have the dual stage vtec motor and I can not find the ecu for it. I believe it is a p2j.
