help- short shifter question
wuttup guys. aight heres the deal- the guy i bought the car from had installed a short shifter prior to me buying it and i have a few questions...
first of all i have absolutely no idea what brand of shifter it is.
without further ado, the problems:
the shifter is reallly tight, just moving it aorund in neutral is kind of difficult to a degree.
and i cant put it into gear easily. i guess what i mean is it doesnt slip into gear, its not that it grinds or anything, ts just that you have to push a tad hard to get it in, expecially going from first to second. is it my synchro's? this makes quick shifting difficult and you know what that does to your races...
my questions is this- should i uninstall and reinstall the shifter? or is there not anyway it can really be installed incorrectly-
another question i have is do you think using GM synchromesh will aid at all?
thanks in advance fellas and any help is much appreciated

My short shifter slips into gear just fine, most of the time.
It's probably a POS shifter that doesn't have sealed bearings in the bottom, and the through-bolt is probably too tight. On shifters with sealed bearings and spacers in the bottom, you can tighten that bolt as much as you want and the movement of the shifter will not be affected. On other shifters that require you to use o-rings and parts from the stock shifter in the bottom (like B&M shifters), it is possible to overtighten the through bolt to the point where the shifter won't even move.
So just check the tightness of that bolt going through the bottom.
Or chuck that shifter and get a better one.

yup, i bet that's it. i tightened mine a little too much, and it felt really stiff. then i loosened it a little bit and it felt fine.

as others have said check the bolt that holds the shifter to the shift linkage. if its too tight it will seem really hard to move. i've been running the gm friction modified fluid for sometime now. going into gears is like a hot knife slicing through butter.

i agree with patrick, chuck the shifter and get a new one!!!
at least that's what i'm going to do
I have a b&m shifter, the first time I install it, i tighten it too tight and it was hard to shift. Then i loosen it up, it was better but the shifting is still bleh. So, when the funds come in, (in two months... damn christmas choking me of my riches), i'll be thinking of getting a neuspeed SS. B&M 50 dollar short shifter sucks! but you get what you paid for.
