what does tunning do??
Hello, I just finished building my engine and they told me I can't run it on the freeway or drive long distances before I tune my car??? I just want to know why??
Also what does tunning do???
I know stupid question, and yea I am rookie but I'm learning...
Thanks I appreciate it guys
Tuning will dial in the events in the engine... spark, fuel, opening of the valves and closing, and the timing of each event so that the engine can attain it's maximum safe power production through out the powerband. Two engines that are idential but have different tunes (ie: different fueling maps from the ecu, different ignition timing maps for spark, adjusted cams, etc) can easily have double digit differences in terms of peak power and power along the rpm band. One might come out a dead horse, the other, a galloping steed.
Tuning is vital to engine life as an engine that's not tuned properly can run very hot, taxing other components in the engine and even causing detonation (uncontrolled burning of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber) Detonation is EXTREMELY damanging to the insides of the engine and if it's not tuned to avoid detonation, engine life will be very short. Tuning also improves things like drivability, throttle response, low end torque, top end horsepower and others.
I hope this breaks it down for you... it's a very simple explaination... once you learn more, you'll understand what is involved in doing it and why things are done certain ways.
