hybrid wire harness

can I take an OBD-1 engine harness and plug it into a 96 hatch?

Simple answer. No.

If you mean converting the motor to OBD1 then i suppose you could, dont know never did one though.

No 92-95 harness are 2 piece engine and shocktower to ecu.
96 and up 1 piece all the way to ecu
