If you are talking about the S1 and J1 trannies, there are a few differences.

If it's a JDM J1 or S1, the gear ratios should be the same (they were both used in the 90-91 Integra XSi). The JDM J1/S1 is very similar to a 92-93 GS-R tranny (aka Short geared YS1) although 1st gear and 5th gear are slightly different. It would be a good transmission for an LS in terms of improving acceleration.

If it's a USDM S1 you are talking about, that is the tranny used in 90-91 Integra LS. It has very long gears, and will not be good for acceleration on the LS.

Just make sure you are getting a JDM S1, and it will be the same as the J1.

Unfortunately, the J1 tranny doesn't have LSD. I think the only 2 cable trannies that are easily accessible that had optional LSD are the JDM Y1 (Civic/CRX SiR) and JDM YS1 (92-93 Integra XSi).

The J1 comes out of the 90-91 Integra XSi, only the 92-93 Integra XSi had optional LSD on the short geared YS1 tranny.

Yep, that's correct. It should help a lot, you should notice much better acceleration because of the shorter gearing. You will probably notice a slight drop in mileage and your rpms will be higher when cruising on the freeway, but it's worth it in my opinion. Even without LSD, you should like it much more - I despise my 92 LS's USDM YS1 tranny (same gearing as the USDM S1 used in 90-91).

Remember, you can always buy an aftermarket LSD if you decide you need it.

I think a brand new Kaaz or Quaife LSD will sell for around $800-900 brand new. However, you may be able to find someone with a used LSD from a JDM YS1 or maybe a used Quaife/Kaaz/other brand unit that will work for between $300-500.
