IIRC it's after 4.8, and before 5.5 depending on load, speed, conditions, etc.

There are several VTEC points, low engage, high engage, as well as high disengage and low disengage depending on the conditions. 5200ish is probably correct for the high engage point.

on the way to trouble shooting v-tech
honda manual in the engine section of diagnose

a.) test drive
bring vehicle to operation temperature about 98 (degrees F)
in first gear accellerate to 5,300 rpms hold for about 5 seconds
if M.I.L. appears then check V-TEC components
( End quote )

this suggests that V-TEC engauges at max 5,300 rpms when idely it shoud in faq
happen at 4,800 rpms

its a hydraulic system, what can fail if it has good oil and everything is ok. Hitting vtec won't cause premature engine wear anywhere that wouldn't have been caused revving to 4600 rpm. Redlining is a different story, and i wouldn't suggest that on a regular basis, but thats another story.

What the hell does the mileage have ANYTHING to do with the engine going boom?

Mine's got 250,000+ and I road race it. If holding it between 4000-6500 rpm for hours isn't killing it, tapping VTEC once in a while won't either.

i have a question related to this. do different ecus, but the same family(p28), cause different vtec engagement points?

with my stock p28, i hit vtec around 4900rpm. it is unmodified

with a friend's stock p28, i hit it around 5200rpm. is this difference normal?
