Default help!!! sanding and primering on my car?

Ok i was gonna get my car painted but i dont have the funds to do it, and i cant even decide on what color to go with, so im gonna wait for awhile. . . .

heres my situation though:
i wanna sand my car down and primer it, and maybe paint it flat black, like the sti in that mag (if anyone has seen it you know what im talkin about ). My car already had a paint job about 2 years ago a shop, its holding up ok, but my body is messed up and i dont dig the color anymore, so i want to sand it down, im wondering what grit sand paper am i supposed to use? can i use a power sander?

then after the sanding i wanna know what kinda primer to use?

after that what kinda flat black paint to use?

i know people have done this before, so if anyone could tell me step by step how to do it and what to use, i would greatly appreciate it . . . . . .

THANX (i no there are other people who would like this info too)

If your going to prime you can knock down the paint down with 320, and a orbital sander to save time. Then prime with a urethane hi-build primer to fill some of the imperfections. Then use some guide coat, block with 320, then smooth and finish with 500 grit water sanding. You can a half and half mixture of greased lighting and water, for the water sanding in a spray bottle. Also you need to make sure scuff the edges with a scuff pad from 3m. Make sure all surfaces that need to be painted or primed are sanded or scuffed to a dull finish. Next paint with your choice of flat black.

Well when we painted my car, first my buddy used a combination of welding and body filler to shave the holes and also to take out all the dents. The rough filler was first taken down to body level with 80 grit I think, and maybe another higher grade, but everything was finished with 320. Then the primer and guidecoat was sprayed on.

Later we wetsanded the entire car (both primered and non-primered areas) with 400 to remove the guide coat, smooth the primer, and feather the transition from edge of primer onto the original paint finish. Then we went back over the whole thing and did it again with 600 (still wet sanding) to make it super smooth.

Then it was time for paint and clear, then wetsanding with 1200 then 2000, then buffing and waxing.

This process took us 2 weekends, plus the evenings of that whole week in between.

dude wtf? using paint stripper would be so much more work it's not even funny, absolutely no point in using it.

And bare primer is NOT suitable for exposure to the atmosphere for extended periods of time. It will absorb moisture and most likely cause problems underneath the primer, like rust.

Its seriously going to look like crap if you half *** it.
You would be better off just leaving it, but if you really
want to make it look like a beater, just get a few red
scotch brite pads and scuff the whole car untill its dull.

Its definatly not the right way to do it, but since your just
spray painting it and not fixing any of your body damage,
this will be quick, and will help the paint stick a little better.

i dont have any body damage, and im not going to half *** it, 12 hours of pure labor might not be enough time, so ill spend more, did anyone ever read the article in SSC "flat black terror"? this is what i want to do to my car, i lost the mag, so now i dont know how to do it, so im asking you guyz, this is just a temporary fix for about 6 months untill i got the money to paint it . . . . . .

if anyone has the link to that article or there way of getting there car flat black with decent results id greatly appreciate it
