VIPER 791XV Alarm
Hey, i just got me a 94 GSR... added the basic bolt-on's and crap.. and i was looking into a security system for my car because of the heavy theft of integras. I was wondering if this alarm (the VIPER 791XV 2-WAY with remote start) is any good and if anyone has had any experience with it. Also, how difficult is the install on it... I have looked around and found a good price on it... Let me know any opinions on this or Viper alarms in general... thanks

That alarm is awesome. If you have general knowledge and a wiring diagram you should be able to do it yourself, but it may take you a while. My friend did his in about 6 hours.
my brother just picked up that same model for his jetta 1.8T, looks like a decent system. I've had Clifford in my car for a few years now and i really like it..no problems at all. Seeing as they're both made by DEI they should be ok units
I have this one. Works pretty good. and the remote reaches about 3 blocks away from my test. Even farther when theres no buildings in the way.

Also has a pager unit that attaches to the windshield. Somone can tap it and your remote will tell you that someone is trying to page you.
you really dont need it.
Also tells u the temperature of the inside of your car.
really nice. i had it for 2 years and its still working perfectly.
the only issue is the mono tone siren.

An expensive alarm with a "standard" installation (aka BestBuy or Circuit City) is worth CRAP compared to a lower-model alarm when installed by a certified professional custom tailoring the installation to your requirements and special needs.
Don't think that buying the top of the line alarm has anything to do with making your car secure - its ALL in the installation
I suggest you search around for car-security forums and try and find a custom installer around 100 miles from your area through there... You also don't want somebody too local installing your alarm, you never know.
Paranoia? yes please.

I'd rather have a mono tone siren than a multi tone siren.

I agree. Very good points here Alexander.

DO NOT do this. Install the alarm yourself. If you do that circuit city install your car will be gone and your alarm will be on ebay. Not to mention sometimes those backyard shops are the ones that steal cars. I have installed a pager alarm and if you have an extra pager (which an alarm shop should) they can program the pager to YOUR alarm.
think about it......

i paid about 180 to install my alarm. he did a good job too. can see any wires, everything zipped tied and the antenna for the remote is placed nice and neatly on the window where you barely see the unit. nice.

What the **** does that mean? You are one stupid ****. Yeah, go ahead and spend 6 hours wasting your time trying to hook up your own alarm. When you do it wrong and it doesn't go off don't be surprised.

No need for that. I dont know why you are so upset. I already installed my own alarm. It works fine. Electronic stores follow a certain routine when installing alarms, theives know that routine. If you want to further discuss how I am a stupid **** PM me
Hey: I just noticed you are from the bay area. So am I!

Are your checks signed by Circuit City of North America or something? All the guy is saying is that you should consider not taking your car to a big brand-name store outlet for a hard-to-beat-discount-price-sale installation deal. Why resort to name calling?
Although installing it yourself is not the smartest thing to do if you have no electrical experience... But regardless, you get what you pay for.

Actually my checks are signed my circuit city, considering I install for them.
Name calling because i put all this hard work into people car's I dont know, probably wont even talk to, and this guy is accusing me of doing a crappy job. I would be doing the same thing he would be if he installed his own alarm, only I have the proper tools, work area, co-workers for help, fully insured environment, and the experience.

It is nice to hear someone actually taking pride in their installations when working for a big-brand company such as Circuit City. But the message we were trying to get across is that as a consensus, on average, the quality, attention to detail, and overall customization to a customer's needs on installations by big brand names such as Circuity City or Best Buy who offer "cheap" or sometimes "free" installations, is NOWHERE NEAR what you can achieve with a custom installer.
This is just a heads up to those that consider buying the most expensive alarm the end-of-the-road for the alarm layer of your security. Please don't take it personally. You may be paying more but this is all part of that security trade-off "pay now or pay later"

yes, you can set it up for manual trans.. but, some shops won't do it. I'm pretty sure it's illegal because if you have the car in gear, even with the E-BRAKE on, it will roll.
I just got the viper 690xv installed(same thing as viper791 but without the remote start). works great, <3 it

I installed the Viper 690xv myself and it was pretty easy. As long as you know your cars wiring (which isn't hard in a Honda), and theres always http://www.the12volt.com with all the help you need.
I would recomend doing it yourself. This way you can put the valet switch where you want, not where every installer puts it. I also highly recomend placing the brain somewhere other then under the dash by the fuse box. also running two sirens and a battery backup siren.
You may also want to checkout http://www.asianwolf.com for alternative 2-way alarms.

yeah.. i got u guys, i have done a **** load of BASIC electrical installs, including countless speaker, sub, amp, heads, and other basic electical wiring in cars before.. both for my own and for friends... I have never done a full alarm system before, and assume its going to take a while... But im sure i can do a better job than the people working at my local Best Buy... Only because i have seen what they have done to people's cars and let me tell you... it was half assed and incorrect....
ANY tips for the install on placement or procedure? I know i can do this myself, and i will take the utmost care while installing.. but tips for doing it right would help..

If you take it to a shop make sure it's reputable.
Although the car will have your plates, don't leave anything in your car with you address or phone number. Just give them your cell number for contact.
I did a lot of research when looking for an installer. The guy who did mine used to be an acura tech, so he knew the car inside and out.
BTW - I have the viper system too. It's great.
