Default no rev limiter?

Ok i decided to take my 93 si out for test drive to see if my rev limiter worked. I started off going downhill(dont know if that matters or not). its about a 30 degree slope i think. anyways i go all the way to 7200 rpm and its doesnt stop and im like wtf? i keep reving it a little more and it goes all the way to 7600-7800 rpm then the engine makes a very short weird grinding noise (i think, couldve been the rev limiter, but im not sure cuz i didnt hold the rpms there), kinda like if you shift to 3rd and it scratches a little. I thought this was strange because i thought the d16z6 was supposed to have a 7200 rpm rev limiter? Anyways maybe it was because i was going downhill, i dunno. im gonna go try it again on a level surface and see if it does it again. btw the car is completey stock, no mods done to it except short ram.

I think/thought a rev limited was s ecu setting that prevented you from reving too high by opening the throttle to full, not nessesarily stop the engine from going to fast if you downshift going downhill. That has to be what you were doing because I can't see why else you would need to do this "test" on a hill?

like i said, im going to do it again on a flat level surface. the hill was the only place i had to do it atm and was probably what did it.

it could have been from the hill but you would have known if you hit it, it would be a violent pulsing. it doesnt keep you from opening the throttle to full it simply cuts fuel to the engine. your tach might not be completely acurate either, it is a common prob to be off 1-300 rpm

Your tach is off.... almost all OEM tachs are off by 100 or so RPMS.... its normal.

you can just try it in neutral ( even though i dont see a reason for this cause there should be no reason for the rev limiter to not work ) and your tach is probably off like most oem ones.

just curious, but why are you trying to test you rev limiter??? But yeah it was because you were going down the hill and the rev limiter will not help with load placed on the engine other than the throttle. Same as if you downshift into the wrong gear. IMO I say just let it go and trust that it is there

my rev limiter on my old b16 ecu was at 8500 rpm. my tach would indicate 9000rpm b4 the ecu would cut out

yeah..
my rev limit (jdm itr) is 9500 (for no reason, actually) but tach reads 9100-9200 when it hits the rev limiter. i could be wrong. i never shift that high, but accidentally did once and thats what i saw i think.

mines off as well (its an auto so it doesnt matter much, but eh..) Is there a good OEM mountable tach? cheap but good? Ill be replacing some bulbs back there soon enough, might as well make sure everything is working properly and accurately. (speedo is off too)

so you are basically telling him to hit his rev limiter to see if his tach is off?? i wouldnt just go by what it says and forget about it. that grinding noise was probably the engine saying not to do it

*smacks forehead*

christ..let me explain the situation a rev limiter works and DOSENT WORK

it works when you are revving the engine by applying the throttle, the ECU eithre cuts fuel or spark (fuel in a honda civic's case i belive) to prevent you from damaging the engine like a retard. it DOSENT work when you are going downhill in gear because there is nothing to stop the revs! think about it, you have a physical link between then wheels and the engine and gravity is now driving the engine, the ECU can try to pull fuel all it wants gravity will still spin the engine as fast as it can move the car downhill.

that "short weird grinding" noise was probably something breaking.

well, ****, thats what i get for being stupid. as for something breaking, my car is running as well as it did before. no noticable changes yet, no check engine light or anything. hope it stays that way.

I like to compare it to hitting a brick wall. I hit it once in the Si... not a pretty thing to do.

I love bouncing off the rev limiter when I am running open downpipe, it's my favorite car noise. I also use my rev limiter as launch control when I am at the track on slicks.

ok i reved my engine, (this time on a flat level surface), as far as it would go in first gear. the engine went all the way to about 7600-7700 rpms then hit the rev limiter. did it again in second gear, same thing. hopefully this is just a malfunction in my tach and its off by 4-500 rpm. however, ive never heard of anyones tach being off by that much but hopefully thats what it is. btw, does the rev limiter also work in neutral or only in gear?
