Oil Getting Dark after 800 miles?
I work at wonderlube so I see a lot of cars oil. I use Mobil one 5-30 synthetic and love the oil. It is one of the best out there. but enough bs, here comes the problem...
I am very **** about changing my oil. I change it every 2500 on the tit, I never go over at all. I do have a slight vtec problem ( I use it way too much
). I recently changed the oil and even used an engine cleaner that we carry, and even pushed a little bit of air through the motor to get as much old oil out of the motor.
After I changed the oil it looked perfect, so I figured my problems were over. I was wrong. After 800 miles, the majorety of which were hwy, my oil was just as dark as ever. Why is this happening?
My only sure that I can foresee is doing a mechanical engine flush which includes an external filter (inside of a machine) and a concentrated cleaner. After that air is used to force out all of the old oil...
What can I do besides a mechanical engine flush, and staying out of vtec (not likely)?
Thanks for the help, as I am getting frustrated with this.

i noticed my oil got dark quick too and posted a very similar question...(dont worry im not about to tell you to a search). Most everyone said its normal. Im not sure about in 800 miles though...my seemed dark after around 1500-2000 miles.
I think the cleaner is what made your oil dark. Those cleaners loosen lots of sludge and carbon and crap. Most likley not all of it drained out and stayed in your engine. Then once you started driving, it mixed in your oil.
Maybe that will help.

I actually did a little search because I remembered that there was a post like this not too long ago... but to no avail... As far as the cleaner goes, you may be right. I don't think that was the case though becuase I did everything to get the old oil out(pushing air through it). I think that i will try eplacing the filter, becasue maybe the cleaner did as you suggested.
I'm pretty sure the lubricating qualties still exist in the oil, but I don't like seeing that nasty color.
I also recently noticed the oil smelled a little bit like gas... could this mean I;m running too rich?

It is completely normal for an oil to turn dark and rather quickly too. It has nothing to do with its ability to lubricate or whether it is breaking down. It is also completely unnecessary to change your oil that often, you are not improving anything by doing it. I, and many other that use Mobil have sent it in to labs to be chemically analyzed. The results - it still is working quite well at or often above 5000 miles. The filter also works more effectively after being on the car for a while. Changing your filter and oil too often actually reduces its ability to filter impurities. If you want to know how your oil is doing send it in to blackstone laboratories.
Here's my last oil report

It's definitly normal for the oil to get black quick. I agree with yield chill on the oil changes. I would change it between 3000-4000 miles. You are just throwing money and time away. As far as the filter working better when its been on awhile I couldn't say. I do know however that your mobil 1 is definitly still good at 2500 miles.

more like 7500 miles for mobil 1 and a good filter, and that's the lower limit.
mobil 1 lasted 18,000 miles in an LS1 with 2 filter changes before it finally went kaput, so every 2500 miles is pretty excessive.
somethin like 8000 is probably good.

well sometimes when you do or get an oil change...and you put the new filter and new oil in it...it will still turn black after letting it run for a bit. its because there is still bad oil in your valves and **** even tho you completely drained the oil. i usually change my oil twice at every oil change period...after the first time draining your oil...put new oil in the engine and let your car run for 10 min..and drain the oil again. youll be surprised how black it still will be after the first time.

the color of the oil has nothing to do with how effective the new oil is.
you're just draining money out of your oilpan with that whole double oilchange thing.
