anyone ever used toulene to increase octane number?
At work today one of our regular customers was telling me about using this stuff called toulene (not sure on the spelling) that you can purchase at hardware stores to boost the octane rating of gas. I was just wondering if anyones ever done this or heard of this? And if its safe or not ?
I wouldnt just use toulene... Mix it with xylene which is a lubricant and all is well.. This is the best known octane booster. Its kinda expensive, but not that bad when you really think about it. Prepare to spend $8 a gallon! Ive used it before and would say its much more effective and clean than using your auto parts octane booster at a much better price!

you live in ga, not far from me. just buy race gas. 4.20 a gallon 110 octane unleaded
but i have heard of it. there was a theard on it about a year ago, had a lot of info

or other mods needing it, which are major ones only. i was not thinking about his reason for asking, just answered...
but why do you want higher octane?

go with xylene, 118 octane, to figure out the octane u will have, say 1 gal xylene and 9 gal 91 oct, .1*118 + .9*91 = 93.7 octane
when using xylene or toulene u should also add some atf as normal gas has some lube added to it, xylene and toulene are not lubricants and do have have any kinds of lube in them, i think its like 5oz atf to 1 gal xylene/toulene, search for xylene and theres a thread about it

how in the world did you know it was 87?

So if you never heard of it...it HAS to suck.

There are a lot of threads in the archive about this, as well as some on the internet (hit up google). You will have trouble though because you are misspelling the name.
Try 'toluene' (although to be honest a lot of people spell it toulene so you might search both terms).
Here is a good link: http://www.elektro.com/~audi/audi/toluene.html
Btw, it is becoming hard(er) to buy this stuff in bulk as it is a chemical used in meth production.

cause it sounded like the engine was about to blow as soon as i stepped on the gas, i was runing some advanced timing in my midrange, and once i put the gas in and got on it, it sounded like a can full of gravel. retarding my timing all teh way and mixing the Xylene in got it cleared up til i could run all teh gas down and put better gas in.

So just add meth into your gas tank
j/p
You say add some kind of lubricant to it, what kind?

read about it in sport compact but never used it. You do not need high compresion pistons to yield a good result with higher octane gas,. The higher the octane rating the cleaner the gas and the more resistant it is to detonation. any compression ratio can benifit from this . But the higher compression cars will benefit more. High octane gas will burn more completely and allow a longer flame front than low rated gas, which tends to explode rather than burn.
