OT... way Ot, but take a look
Pretty off topic
I'm only 20 miles away from Pearl Harbor. My grandfather came here a few years ago to get some closer on his older brother and close friends of his who were killed there. My grandfather was a Marine and was one of the original 82nd Airborne. He's old as dirt. Recieved two Bronze Stars.
Anyone out there ex Military?
Myself, I didn't see any war time but was in for a while. I was medically discharged from the U.S. Army for breaking my left shoulder. It sucks horribly being disabled. I'm 70% disabled in my left arm. The only bright side to having a shoulder dislocate when I look at it wrong is, I have Veterans Status and Uncle Sam gives me a pay check every month for the rest of my days.
Veterans day is a shitty day for me and I'm quite sure anyone else out there who was in the Armed Forces or is currently serving. All I do is mope around all day.
Even if you strongly disagree with war, so much that your absolutely passionate about it, don't forget those who signed on the dotted line to protect what you hold dear.

Opie, who doesn't agree with this war, still loves America and supports troops as much as possible.
USA USA USA!

Surely an amazing man!! Wasn't 82nd Airborne an Army unit, or did he manage both? Just curious and amazed at his contributions. A good source of pride!

Also, I never got into his head too much, but Veteran's Day always seemed to inspire a sense of pride for my Dad. He always receives a fair amount of "thank you" calls from family and friends.

A brief summary on the 82nd Airborne:
The 82nd Airborne is located in Ft. Benning, Georgia. Roughly 10 miles from Columbus and about an hour and a half drive, South South East of Atlanta. Ft. Benning, GA is home of the Infantry where everyone who signs up as 11Bravo, 11Charlie, 11Hotel, 11X-ray, 11Mike go through basic training. After basic and AIT you have the option to go to jump school (82nd Airborne). After you have successfully completed jump school, and if your ASVAB scores were high enough you then have the option of going through R.I.P.P. (Ranger Inductive Pre-Program) school, Pathfinders, S.E.A.R's, and other various infantry training corses which are all located at Ft. Benning.
Since the 82nd airborne has such a tight setup and the jump masters have teaching down to a science, the other branches of the armed forces come to Ft. Benning and the 82nd Airborne jump school to get certified. Rather than opening jump schools all over the nation, they all go to Ft. Benning. If my horribly short-term memory serves me correctly there are so many classes going on at once that there is a graduation every 5 days. Though the 'fall-out-rate' or should I say, people who are injured is around 20%.
So to make a long story short, all branches to go Ft. Benning to take jump school at the 82nd Airborne Regiment.
Aloha,
Brandon

I get it. Makes sense then, and all comes together. I'm more than a bit of a history buff so I love finding out details, esp Airborne info (Dad was 101).
Thanks.
The 101st is not considered 'Airborne' per say, but is called 'Air Assault' or 101st Air Assault Division with the 'Screaming Eagle' patch. The training division for 101st is located in Ft. Bragg North Carolina. 101st has nothing to do with airplanes at all. These soldiers are deployed from low flying choppers by repelling. They are some high speed mother *******. Almost every Green Beret, Ranger, Delta Force, SEAL...are all certified in 101st.

Opie, who doesn't agree with this war, still loves America and supports troops as much as possible.

that is the problem now. that was the greatest generation ever and ever since the hippies we have been pussies. war is nessesary(sp) now and will be in the future. tell me one important event in world history that has not hinged on war or the threat of war. if you can do that I will agree with you totally.
My grandfather served in europe and his brothers both in the pacific. I have stuff here I am looking at that is from all over the world during that time(stamps, **** emblems{SS, gastopo, armor divisions, etc} coins, paper money, 2 belgian bayanets, 2 german bayanets, 2 **** daggers, 2 **** helmets, and a few other things). I am a history education major and this time period is my fortay. I find it totally amazing that those men went there and fought for so long just to free other people. My personal favorite of the time period is that we saved the french and if it weren't for us they would still be hailing hitler and speaking german, yet they won't stand behind us?
Rob, I am very glad to see a post like this thanks

Though you are a History Major, you and the other history majors and anyone for that matter, who ever took a history class, never got the full story. Unfortunately for the people who took these classes, little do they realize that history is always written by the winners. Never the losers. Ever.

this is true to a point. I will explain that a little later because I have to run, but I independently study this time period because it is my fortay so I am not so much being taught....I am more or less teaching myself or talking to people who were there first hand.

Ft. Benning is also where the School of the Americas is located. Some call this the school of assasins. Atrocities have been commited by graduates from this school.

Relax chief, I am no *****.
I am not anti war, I do not however agree with this war. I do support our troops over in the Middle East and know quite a few guys from my neighborhood who are serving our great country as I type. God bless America.

do you believe we should have been in europe in the 40's? if so you are contradicting yourself. as long as you support our troops now as well as the past and future you are ok in my book
now back to history is written by the winners. this is not always true. one example off the top of my head is the scotish fighting the british for their freedom(think braveheart). The scots tended to destroy all written word about scotish history so most of what is known of that time is from english texts. actually there are times in william wallaces life that no one has any idea where he was or what he was doing. this could be up to 5 years or so. if the english didn't write it no one knows
