Default my car died on the freeway

The motor is rebuilt about 1 year old now, the starter just got rebuilt 3 days ago. Everything was running fine until I was going home on the freeway. As it got dark, i turned my headlights on and I noticed my car lose power and the check engine light came on so I pulled over. I had to get my car towed home. I tried to start it but it won't start, it makes the starting noise but the engine would not turn on.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

electrical? internal?

Sounds to be electrical to me. But as you are probably aware its next to impossible to diagnos a problem without actually being at the car. Make sure you are getting fuel and spark before you move on to more complicated things.

I'm a car newbie and I don't know how to check for those things... but I don't want to spend a lot of money if its only electrical... Towing the car home, cost me my whole wallet.

could be the alternator. Everything was running fine until you turn on the headlights. Sound like your car has been running on the battery.

If the car is turning over fine now I don't thinkits the battery or alternator. If it was either the battery would more than likely be dead. I would look more into possible distributor/ignition problems or a short somewhere.

How do I check for a short?
