Default B16A3 swap...

Tried searching the archives but no luck, so here's my question.

My buddy's got a 98 Honda Civic EX and plans to drop in a B16A3 which is a OBD1. What ECU can he use?

what matters is what "harness" or "harness conversion" you are going to use. the car is obd2, so you need to convert it to obd1, and use the obd1 ecu that came with the motor.

It seems like the B16A3 is a pretty rare motor, I came across one a couple months ago and just got done swapping it into my 92 cx which is obd1 so I just had to use the same harness. Hope you enjoy it, it's a big step up from the D16 I use to have in the hatch

Would the Skunk2 wire adapter work? This is what it says on their web site...

This conversion harness offers a pain free alternative for owners of 1996-2001 Honda/Acura vehicles hindered by the factory OBDII ECU. This conversion harness, along with an OBDI ECU, will convert the vehicle to OBDI. Simply plug one side of the harness into the OBDI ECU, and the other side to the factory engine harness. No cutting or soldering is needed. For optimum results, use with Skunk2 Racing modified ECU program. FOR OFF-ROAD USE ONL

I don't think so. 99 SI came with a B16A2 and the Delsol VTEC came with a B16A3.

i dont think there is a difference in the a2's and a3's
same cams, valvetrain, pistons. gearing might be a tad diff but nothing that i would think that would be noticable

Another question, can I use the d16y8 harness or do I have to get the d16z6 harness or some other harness?

d16y8 is obdII so that is the one you'll use with that skunk harness converter.

for the engine, i would convert to obd2 injectors, altenator, and distributor in order to use the engine harness that is on the stock d16y8.

if you don't have to plug in to the obd2 diagnostic port for emissions testing, i would run a ob2a->obd1 ecu harness converter and run a chipped p28 ecu or p30 ecu (which also needs a knock sensor wire)

if you do need to use the diagnostic port for emissions, i would run a obd2a p30 ecu if you can find one (only on 96-97 del sol vtecs). my next choice would be obd2a p72 ecu off a gsr. the p2t ecu from the 99-00 si isn't ideal as you'll need a conveter harness from obd2a to obd2b AND you'll never get rid of all your check engine lights

Yeah but what I'm saying is, is the b16a3 a plug and play as far as in the engine compartment. I'm going to use the adapter by the ecu but what i'm talking about is using the b16a3 engine harness or do I have to change it so it'll plug up to the wires that come out the firewall...confused yet?j/k

plugs on the b16a3 are obdI and should not be able to plug into an obdII harness.

those orange plugs arne't even apart of the engine harness. what you're doing is swapping an obd1 motor into an obd2 car. you're going to need to convert it to obd2a.
