91 si hatch with a b16a1 for smog?
hi i'm new to this, i've never owned a honda before, my family's always had toyotas and i previously owned a '00 celica gt, and unfortinately its been wrecked a while back and i picked up a '04 scion xb, and now i have just recently picked up a 91 si hatch. i want to do a swap with obd-0 so my choice is a b16a1. has anyone been able to pass Smog legaly with the swap? and wouuld i need to change out my tranny to a b16a1 tranny as well for the car to run and work? Thanks...
Sorry i'm a noob!

You will not pass with this motor running OBD-0 since this motor was not run in the states during those years. You must use a B-Series transmission with a B-Series motor, there are no ifs/ands/buts about it; I do suggest you do A LOT more reading on it though before you tackle it.
There is no way you are going to pass smog with the jdm b16 in California. I've heard of ways to get around it, but it's gonna be a pain in the ***. You have to convert everything into obd1, meaning you would have to run it as an obd1 del sol, with the ecu and all the emission crap that came with the del sol. Good luck finding a del sol ecu, cause theres not that many around. Plus, do your research first. There's a lot of time and money that you're gonna lose, so make sure you know what you're doing. Don't get stuck like most people who think they got everything they need. Trust me, I was one of them.
Jdm B16 (from what I've read) can be passed. I believe you must make it usdm del sol specs. Replace ECU (p28), distributor, intake manifold, change the 2 O2 sensors to something I can't remember, and I think some other things. Take the B16 to a CHP station or to a smog ref. They usually help out alot and tell you exactly what you need to do. The other thing u can do is swap in the usdm b16a(3?) from the vtec del sol and it might be easier to legalize, and you get the hydro tranny, but I've heard it's a bitch to get the hydro in. -Jason
If you want to do an engine swap, just call the number for the ref and tell him/her what engine you want to put in your car. They have seen enough to let you know what others have done wrong. The ref's are really cool people. They only do their job as to see if your engine has all the smog devices hooked up or not (according to the engine and what vehicles it was supplied to in the US)
hope this helps

Nevermind, California=lots of bullshit. In Missouri, if it can meet the emission standards for that car, it passes. In reality, a b16a can run just as clean as stock engines, but california tries to get all specific about it.

Read it several times and if anything isn't clear, make a note of it and get the answer BEFORE you get too far into the process.
It's not hard to get a B16 (in an 91 SI) through the Referee process, but you have to be exacting in what you do.
As was hinted at in one of the prior posts, you WILL have to convert the car to OBD1 and have all the smog equipment that would be on a 94/95 Del Sol. The reason that car is the one quoted is that it's the first years that an "american" honda had a B16. A "96" version would be OBD2, and thats more difficult.
