so are u saying it's worth the money to have them paint my car?

im thinking of getting the cheapest ($199) one lol. since im not going to enter my car in carshows so i don't need the expensive paints.

i just want my car to have a decent paintjob

Exactly. $200 will get your car painted, most likely with little to no body work or preperation and the paint won't last. Spend the money and get it done right the first time.

I absolutely agree.

Just remember, if you get the $199 paint job thats how its gonna look. Up to you.

well, ill put it this way. i work in the paint department of a body shop and whenever we get a car with a really bad paint job over there we call it "an Earl Scheib job". i have never actually seen an earl scheib job, but the painters (including my dad) all started me on this.

if you dont mind over spray, sanding marks, and clear with no uv protection, go ahead and get an inexpensive job.

to be fair, i have seen some good stuff come out of maaco. so it can be done. it will just cost money.

thing to remember, you get what you pay for.

Well it depends on the particular shop but most of them give you a basic prep (so do all that you can) and shoot the paint with or without clear. They only tape off the windows and tailpipe and just shoot the entire car. They'll paint moldings and gaskets that aren't supposed to be. They use their own brand of paint and it's alright but they don't put a true clear coat over it to protect it. Tree sap will ruin it. Overall, it'll look good for the money but it's not very durable...needs a good clearcoat.

I have heard to many bad things about them, I know a lot of people will say the same about maaco also but if you do a search for maaco you will find my car and you will like the quality of it.

I have seen Earl's work and it is wonderful if you are looking for a low quality piece of crap that won't last and is a waste of money.

As stated above save the pennies and have a reputable shop handle it for you

I wouldnt even go to Maaco if I were you. My Uncle had his van painted by Maaco and it came out so bad he stopped payment on the check when he got it back. Not even a month later the paint was peeling off. However, I have seen in person some decent quality stuff from One Day Paint and Body. But like eveyone else says you get what you pay for.

About 14 years ago, my brother decided to have his 1986 Dodge Colt (one of the worst cars ever made, by the way) painted black. So he took it to Earl Scheib to have one of their cheap paint jobs done. I believe it costed $199 at the time. So it was probably a step up from what you plan to get. In any case, the paint job was HORRIBLE! Old, faded factory paint would have been a MAJOR step up from what he had. So do yourself a favor and save for something better.

I'm not sure where you are in SoCal but i got my EF painted at a placed called 1 Day Paint in Long Beach, another quick chain sort of place but nowhere near the size or Earl or Maaco...they did a phenomenal job, simple base + clear of DuPont plus they match to factory codes and such...check them out...they are on Cherry just east of the 405.

There are too many Earl Sheib's, Maacos, 1 day paints.... blah blah blah.

An Earl Sheib in one place may have really awesome painters and another Earl Sheib may have the worst. So to ask if Earl Sheib puts out good paint jobs all depends on the people doing the job at your particular location.

As far as clear coat goes, I think most of the chain stores offer a clear coat at an additional cost. Your $199 may be $399 with clear and a buff job.

1 day paint.

$399
choice of any DuPont color (g71p)
base + clear
door jambs and underhood (even masked off my SiR emissions/vaccum sticker)
3 year warranty against, fade, wrinkle, flaking etc.

i also informed them that I would be getting a new spoiler, lips, etc. told me come back whenever and they'll paint free of charge...and they did!

yeah i know it's a gamble with these mass production shops but some of us can't really afford the top quality and still want something better than multi-color, rattle can, or primer.

I know the 1 day paint shop on Cherry in Long Beach did a great job on my car, although it wasn't done in 1 day

I would like to comment on something else too. You can spend $3000 and still get a shitty paintjob. It all depends on whether or not the people prep/painting know what they're doing and are taking their time. I've dumped $1600 on a paint job I wasn't completely happy with before but was suckered into believing I HAD to spend that kind of money to get a quality job...this is simply not true. So do your homework, do all the prep you can do and get references.

I had my eg hatch painted at earl scheib. I got a base coat and 3 clear coats or $350. It turned out great. You just need to strip everything you don't want painted before. I should be all good. hopefully

Im a huge fan of Maaco, I just think that you dont wanna spend too much on a paint job for a $1000 car LOL. But you do want it to be presentable. Maaco painted my red 88 Lude Si, a red 86 base Lude, my blue (smurf) 97 Eclipse GS-T, and my black 99 Eclipse GSX. All the jobs came out great, especially the two Eclipses that I had them clear.

pchhh.... I paid $1300 for my 91 Teal Civic EF to be repainted.... Fukin flawless... I definitely got what i paid for. And if it didn't get stolen, i could imagine the paint wouldn't look a day older then when i got it repainted. It shimmered... wasn't some lousy (no offense) maaco paint. But for the Cash i guess maaco is good, but if your willing to spend the money on it, i would. Most local places that are good, will give it a complete every step of a professional paint job.. enough coats for each step. Also keeps the paint fresh.

So i still believe you get what you pay for.... And i love Honda's so i would definitely pay that much again..

This is exactly what my old car looked like.. It just ISNT mine
