Shifting into 2nd when cold out.
I purchased a 98 GS-R about a month ago, and lately it's been getting really cold(btw this is my first manual car). I've noticed when I start the car up it's idling at around 1k-2krpms because it's cold out. Now, when I first take off, I'm in first, but when I switch to 2nd, it gives me a little trouble. It seems to pop back out. When the car is warm and the RPM's are normal, it works fine. Is this something to worry about or what? It like doesn't pop, pop out... but it kind of feels like it doesnt want to go into 2nd.
true very true, let it get to operating temp! another tip essp. in cold weather, the shorter the distance your gonna drive the car like say to the local store, it isnt good on your car, the farther distance you drive will be better on your car, sounds stupid but very true, because your starting your car and turning it off so quick, so let it run, dont start it and go right away, warm her up
You cant wait for a car to warm up to temp, oil takes way longer than coolant, and waiting for the tranny fluid to soak up the heat from the engine would be ludacris
I agree on the 3 minutes, I usually let mine warm up 3-5 minutes or so when its really cold
My roommate has a block heater on his Integra, which is something I feel is a must for those REALLY cold mornings. Then again, I am a diesel guy and my truck is plugged in whenever its parked if its below 20

seems kind of like an issue...if you have the time and money, I would take these steps in troubleshooting it:
-Inspect tranny shifter linkage rod and bushings
-Inspect engine bushing mounts
-Change tranny fluid

if the problem is in the tranny (as opposed to simply the tranny has not had a chance to circulate the gear oil, which is thicker than normal when cold so will not circulate as quickly), it is much more likely to be a bad synchro than shifter bushings or whatnot, especially considering it's second gear, which is probably #1 most often "banged" gear. okay, now give me an award for longest sentence ever!

I have the same problem with mine, so it isn't anything to do with the clutch??? it doesn't grind at all or anything it just has a hard time going into second, and third and reverse. I thought it was the clutch but maybe I'm wrong, it started happening all at the same time about 2 weeks ago (don't mean to hijack the thread).

yeah it very well could be mechanical...if it's a newly bought car I try to go easy on suggesting tearing things apart

I had the exact same problem in my JDM Si-VTEC...what i used to do was just drive slowly in 1st for a while and it then usually went into 2nd without a problem. You could try changing the tranny oil for HMTF2 and see if it cures it....
so it only happends on start up? then chances r that its cuz ure gear oil is cold, b8ut if it happends all the time, it could b a number of things, low gear oil, too much clutch freeplay, bad synchro shift linkage not adjusted
